If you can check out the WV miniseries documentary (1996) Ken Burns, Narrated by Richard Thomas. They dedicate half of part 3 to the feud.
    Thanks H.
I was hoping someone could note the historical accuracy of this. Double thanks for mentioning The Burns Documentary as another source of reference. I vaguely remember the 70's Mini-series with Jack Palance. But soon after found out it was more a fictional account. I watched all 3 nites along with the encore showings. I thought the whole thing was well acted, entertaining and informative. I'm a big fan of Bill Paxton. I think the guy is a great actor. The way he just boldly through's himself into these roles. He convincingly portrayed the Elder McCoy's as Broken war vet and almost religious fanatic. It was a well acted sympathetic but tragic character portrayal. Costner's Anse Hatfield came off as more devious and manipulative. I'd have to agree. He is suited better to westerns. Beringer's Uncle Vance was also well portrayed as I hated that SOB! I could'nt wait to see him get his. The other great thing in the portrayal of the 2 patriarchs. Is the underlying reluctance they had to escalate this feud. I thought this rational as both men had seen the horrors of war and would not wish to bring that home with them.
I hope I did'nt Hi-Jack this thread. But this is a topic of great interest to people in my area. I think its also a interesting side note to those interested in the history of the Civil War. For those who are on the fence about watching this mini series. Or have issue with some of the cast. I think its worth watching for the history and the portrayals.

I recorded it and watched the finale last night. Really well done. I of course had heard of the Hatfields and McCoys as everyone else, but didn't know the history behind the feud.

Got it all on TIVO. Might watch it this evening or the weekend. Looks top-notch. Glad to have it, since most of my other shows have ended their season.

I've only watched part 1 so far ...., waking up at 3 in the Morning for work has limited my nightly viewing capability with programing. Thank God for On Demand though ...btw .... No Comercials.

Paxton is real Interesting to me here ...
I don't think he's ever done this sorta Role before ....., He's real serious... and sorta F'ed up in the Head too ... Interesting Role.

Digging Tom Bernenger's Role as the Crazy Uncle Dude ....., He steals some scenes in Part 1 imo.

I recorded the first 2 parts and plan on watching it after tonight's last part. I think i heard part one had something like 13.5 million viewers. Not bad for a Monday night.
Same here. I want to watch it without pesky commercials.

Costner has always delivered in the Western genre...this is no exception...I have him second only to Clint Eastwood in the modern Western era.
    Agreed!

His last one...Open Range...if you haven't seen it...run an rent it...instant classic right there...what a fantastic movie...too bad it was practically ignored at the theaters.
Open Range is one of my favorite movies, western or no. It's gotten a lot of play on TV since it left theaters, so I think it's picked up a lot of steam in the public consciousness since it kind of drifted in and out of theaters.

The thing I love most about Open Range is how it seems like a conventional western, but it takes some of the tropes of westerns and turns them on their heads. Costner's first shot in the big gun fight for one. Great moment.
