Listening to a good radio story about the creation of the Lone Ranger character. Very interesting. NPR is doing a whole series about great American fictional characters.

I wish they'd release a legit version of Clayton Moore's classic series on DVD instead of the dollar store public domain stuff that's floating around. Besides Batman, The Lone Ranger was my early favorite super-hero as a kid. I considered him a super-hero back then because in my mind he all of the necessary trappings....sidekick (Tonto), fast transportation (Silver), costume (powder blue Ranger's uniform), secret ID (presumed deceased John Reid), unique trademark weaponry (silver bullets) and trademark catch-phrase (Hi Yo Silver Away!).Think OUTSIDE the Box! For the BEST in Repro & Custom Packaging! -

I love LR, and have an extensive Gabriel/Hubley collection: figures, playsets, and horses aplenty. I was a big fan of the animated Saturday morning show from the early 80s, and to a lesser extent of the 1982 live-action film with Christopher Lloyd as Butch Cavendish. Last year I started buying the Clayton Moore TV series on DVD; I'd never seen these and I find them interesting and fun, if understandably limited. There's also a new comics series, which I've thumbed through but haven't purchased, mainly because they treat LR as a kind of Batman character lurking around in the darkness, which doesn't feel right to me. I have written my own set of LR stories (just outlines, really) that are more in keeping with the original, "clean" conception but which have teeth in their own right. Anyway, glad to know it's his 75th birthday this year! Cheers and "HI-YO" to the Masked Man!Comment

The Lone Ranger is special to me because its something both my dad and I really enjoy. My dad was a HUGE Ranger fan as a kid. It was his favorite radio program.
My grandparents gave me the Gabriel reissue giftsets of LR and Silver and Tonto and Scout when the the 80s movie came out. I still have those horse and have tracked down new Rangers and Tontos to replace my old ones. I could easily get into that line.
I tried the new comic series, but I agree with Vortigern 99 that it is too dark. Plus it is very decompressed and took 6 issues to get the Ranger into his mask. The mini-comic that came with the Gabriel Ranger told his complete origin in 6 to 8 pages. The new series is not my cup of tea.
I'd love to see the Ranger get a big budget movie treatment like The Mask of Zorro. If done right, I think there could be a successful Lone Ranger film series. I really like the epic scope of the 80s movie, the music, the filmography, Christopher Lloyd, but the casting of the Ranger was off. Clinton Spilsbury looked the part, but his acting left much to be desired. So much so that his voice is dubbed by another actor throughout the whole movie.
May I recommend tracking down the DVDs of Clayton Moore and Jay Silverheels Lone Ranger theatrical movies, "The Lone Ranger" and "The Lone Ranger and the Lost City of Gold". These are great movies for their time, and expand on what they could do on TV a lot.

I used to watch both Lone Ranger cartoons, and sometimes the reruns of the TV series. And c'mon, who doesn't love the William Tell Overture? Happy Anniversary Kimo Sabe!"Do you believe, you believe in magic?

I love all of the Lone Ranger "stuff", too. The TV series, the cartoons, the toys, etc. I hope that they do properly release the TV series onto DVD. It certainly deserves to be.
