"Beastie Boys" rapper MCA -- real name Adam Yauch -- has died.
In 2009, MCA announced he was being treated for a cancerous parotid gland and a lymph node. He has since undergone surgery and radiation therapy.
So far, it's not clear if the death is related to the rapper's battle with cancer.
Russell Simmons' website GlobalGrind.com first reported the death. We have spoken to people independently connected to the rapper who also say he is dead.
Yauch co-founded Beastie Boys in 1979 with Mike D, Mix Master Mike, and Ad Roc. The group has won multiple Grammys.
Yauch became a vegan at the recommendation of his Tibetan doctors.
Yauch is survived by his wife and daughter. He was 47.
Had the pleasure (and it was very much a pleasure) of interviewing these guys back in '86 when I was a DJ way small, 110-watt underground radio station in West Philly. They had a very cool sense of music.
Later, when their first album came out and went number one, they returned to Philly, but this time headlining the big Basketball/Hockey stadium in Philly (then, the Spectrum). We called their press folks, asking for tickets, in case they remembered our small effort in making them big. Not only did they give us tickets, they gave us a bunch of backstage passes. They remembered us and remained really cool guys. MCA and Ad Rock grabbed a box of t-shirts and we had a blast heading to a side entrance, handing out freebies to anyone who walked by.
This is terrible, I was a life long fan and still am.
I wore out two copies of "Check your Head" in college. My (then) toddlers handed me a copy of "New York" for father's day 2006. I associate him and his music with better times in my life, I will miss him.

Some criticize their induction to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame...but they were highly influential in their particular genre...and they were certainly not one hit wonders...The Beastie Boys were multiple Grammy winners...had many top selling hit albums...a long career...and covered multiple genres besides rap...such as punk (as they were originally a punk band)...one of their albums was just pure instrumentation, no rap or singing...and were indeed solid musicians...not parrots rapping besides a turntable like many other hip pop acts.
