For the Saint Louis MO and the immediate surrounding area I want to say Kroger's. I had thought that they were all dried up. I think they are some still farther South and I do remember seeing one on a trip through IL some time ago. Not sure of their current status though.Enjoy what you like, and let others enjoy what they like. (C) Azrak 2009

Brooklyn people will know this name....Bohack. Used to live right behind one off of Kings Highway in Brooklyn."When not too many people can see we're all the same
And because of all their tears,
Their eyes can't hope to see
The beauty that surrounds them
Isn't it a pity".

Here its;
A&P, that bldg became the now defunct Auto Works. Now its sectioned off into a small strip of stores.
Giants, we had 2 of them. One was side by side to Giantway.
Horrible history before it became Giants. Bldg was a Yankees and a movie was made about it. An Ordinary Killer.
Kessels, it was a Kroger first then became Kessels. Then became the defunct Save A Lot. Now its a thrift store.
We have a Kroger again in a different bldg.
Ugh, I know too much about this town....Wants, original parts; thinking...
It's the quiet ones you gotta watch!

We still have A&P here...
Foodtown is all gone now and I'm not sure if Dagastino's is still around but the commercials used to be everywhere in the 80's. "Please Mr. Dagastino, move closer to me..." kind of a suggestive line now that I read that without the terrible animation that was the visual."Many Shubs and Zuuls knew what it was to be roasted in the depths of the Sloar that day I can tell you."Comment

A&P became Metro around here.
Mr. Grocer became something else (IGA? Ultramart? Loeb's?) and that was bought out by Sobey's.
Dominion was were my mom did her shopping when we were kids.
Loved going grocery shopping as a kid, now it's a pain in the ***.Comment

They're huge. In fact, they're the biggest grocery store chain in the States, and one of the top five retailers (based on sales) on the planet. The thing is, they go by lots of different names: Kroger, Fred Myers, King Soopers, Fry's, Baker's, City Market, Ralphs, Food 4 Less, Dillons...here in town, the Dillons stores are called Gerbes. In the mid-late 80s, they left the St. Louis market (they still have a strong presence in Jefferson City, Columbia, and Springfield), as well as a few others like Houston, northern Michigan, Florida, and Chattanooga.I did not realize that they were still around as much let alone that big of a grocery store chain. I figured some chain like Dierberg's or Schnuck's would have been much larger. That shows how little I know about the top retailers.
