    Surplus food stores

Do any of you frequent these outlet groceries? You know, the ones that feature truckload buyouts of food at bargain basement prices...some of it outdated, some of it dented, some of it with packaging written in Arabic...

We have a couple in our area that we go to all the time...you can get some great bargains there. store overruns stuff like that. We bought store brand (Meijjer) Raisin Bran for $1.49 a box the other day, good stuff and in-date. My total for a trunkload of groceries was $53.00!

Today I saw some toys on a table for $1.99, they had drug store stickers on them. Picked up a Green Lantern movie figure of the Guardian, a couple alien GLs, and a Brave & the Bold Gold Metal Men figure. Ran out of extra cash, but I'll probably go back and if they still have any grab an B&B Aquaman- outrageous!

we have an Alde's and a couple independents here, but don't frequent them. Walmart will actually comp Alde's prices so the savings for still come from the house that Sam built.

We have an Alde's here but I don't like it.

Prices aren't that good and you have to bring your own shopping bags.
        Selection is small too.

I'd rather shop at Walmart for most things and Shop-Rite (local grocery store) for meat --- I don't trust buying meat from Walmart

As a kid, I remember we'd sometimes go to the Hostess outlet.

          Mmmm.... Hostess fruit pies.

Around here they are called salvage grocery, or frieght stores. They sell stuff that is out of season, ex halloween cookies right now. They seemed to pop up alot when the economy started to go bad. Some have stayed some haven't.Just about everything they sell is expired from a name brand store or dented from the delivery truck.
You can get some pretty good deals if you ckeck them out at the right time.
These are not Aldi type stores. They are not chains but indepently owned that that just buy and sell cheap.

thats the way most are. They serve the areas that don't have a big chain store close by.

In Evansville, we used to have a Dolly Madison outlet. Dolly Madison made good stuff and "Peanuts" were part of of their advertising. Good memory.

Evansville, has an Aldi's, now. I've seen it when we visit, but I've never been there. In fact, I believe that Queens, NY (Rego Park area) has an Aldi's, as well. I'm not sure about the other boroughs.

Yeah, these stores are not Aldi's (we have one of those too). These are freight salvage, although they do carry fresh meats, produce, & are serviced by the snack & soda vendors like Lays & Coke. The ones we have are very clean & organized, just like regular grocery stores, but the stuff is cheap and when they sell out it's gone.

This is the one we have near us, they have a couple of these stores in the area:

                            Surplus Outlet - Home

This is the other, this one is run by a group of Mennonites and plays church music over the speakers:

                            Wengers Discount Grocery Outlet

We hit Aldi every week, great food and cheap. Its like a cleaner Savealot. And for those not liking the bring your own bags thing, just wait other stores are getting ready to do it too. Target is already giving a 5 cent rebate for every bag you bring. Publix is going to start in on it soon, too.
