    The Honeymooners accelerated

Been enjoying The Honeymooners on METV but as someone familiar with the shows I am more aware of the time compression. The show is run uncut but still fits in a roundabout 22 minute slot when the original time was 25-26 minutes.

Back in the day when WPIX showed TH, they ran them cut to pieces like thier other syndicated shows. But the NYC based Honeymooners fan club RALPH, lobbied to get them to show the shows uncut in the 80's. When they did, they used time compressed versions that shaved the running time down to 24 minutes.

Later on TVLand used the more compressed 22 minute versions that METV uses.

It is interesting that The Honeymooners is the only show I can think of shown compressed enough to not edit it on current TV. It probably due to WPIX and their commitment to show the shows uncut. Perhaps they used the 22 minute versions to allow for more ads after my cable system lost WPIX (as a result of the syndication exclusivity rule)

When you say compressed, what does that mean? What is taken out to cut down on the time if it remains unedited.

    Thanks!

Compressed means it's actually shown slight faster than normal

If they do it too much the show begins to have chimpmunk voices =--- like i've noticed a lot of R-2 dvd's have.

I've seen a few more, but they use weird tricks like compression to make them fit. They've been showing the original season of "Law and Order" here, compressed at different points so it's not as noticable.

Except for the opening and closing themes, which go by really fast.

That is because of PAL format and it's framerate which speeds it up roughly 4%

They actually would have higher pitch voices but electronically pitch it back to normal. But yes, the show is sped up faster than normal and less would be edited or in the case of The Honeymooners, nothing edited at all.

I tried to watch it the other night on METV but it did nothing for me .But I guess thats because I never really watched this back in the 70's or 80's in syndication .I like Jackie Gleason but still didnt laugh once

Wow, they just had an edit on tonight's episode "Brother Ralph" and it is not compressed (at least not as much as usual). So, maybe some other episodes are edited.
