Long night and days in farmer world

With the early spring, we had early blooms and now we are fighting frosts and freezes. Nothing like sitting in the truck all night watching the irrigation system for blow outs. We left the house at 2:30 a.m. when the thermometer alarm went off, and we are just winding down. Hubby still has to go into work at his "real job" for the rest of the day. At least I get to rest now.

Icing blueberries to protect them from a freeze

Blueberries are the number one crop in our area. Just the western half of our county produces a third of the blueberries grown nationwide. We have about two hundred and fifty growers in the county, ranging from ten acre farms to 1,000 acre farms.

We are too cold for production cabbage and lettuce. Onions require a mucky soil, which we do not have. Farmers used to grow beets around here, but there isn't enough of a market for those buggers anymore.

Corn, soy beans, gourds and asparagus also all grow well around here, but require acres and acres and acres and acres to make a living.
