Ultraman complete series dvd info needed(Ultraman experts please help! )

I did not watch much of Ultraman growing up. My 9 year old son is now into Ultraman thru a friend of his.

My question is where can I get the entire Ultraman series on dvd in english? If it has to be some subtitles, then he will have to deal with it.

I have seen the complete dvd Ultraman dvd om amazon, but says Japanese- wasnt this show dubbed though?

    And what is Ultraman powered?

Anyway- any Ultraman experts? It also does not matter if I buy dvd-r's of this series.

    Thanks!

The original classic Ultraman was dubbed and released in a box set here. It was later made into a cheaper box set, which shows up online for about $10 (and was at Target, etc) and it features both the dubbed episodes and the episodes with subtitles.

Quick note, on that DVD, you'll notice that sometimes even in the "dubbed" episodes, it'll switch to a scene or two that's subtitled. That's because these scenes have been restored to the original episodes and since they were cut back in the 60's, no dubbing was done for them. Nothing is wrong with the discs, it's supposed to do that.

There are only two other "American" Ultraman shows. Ultraman Great (Known as Toward the Future in the US) but it doesn't have a DVD release. It shows up online sometimes though for download and I think Netflix had it for a bit.

                  The other is Ultraman powered.

Likewise, you can find some DVDs of Ultraman Tiga and Dyna, they had a brief run here in the US where they were dubbed. I think only a few DVDs were released, though, not the whole series.

Ultra 7 was dubbed in the 60's, but it doesn't have a DVD release. But you should be able to find the episodes online. TNT used to run them back in the late 90's in the early morning still. Ultra Seven is a great show.

Some of the more modern Ultraman shows have been subtitled by fans (and sometimes officially) but they haven't been "officially released" in the United States.

The current Ultraman is actually Ultraman Zero. He's had a few movies, but no show. The movies can be bought online, but I'm not sure which ones have official subtitles. Again, best to track them down online.

If you want more Ultraman, your best bet is the net. However I always advise people to email Tsuburaya and let them know you want Ultraman DVDs released in the US. You'll get a canned response, but maybe, just maybe someday that'll prompt them to release more Ultraman in the states. This is their website: M-78

If he's digging Ultraman, you should also show him some Red Baron (Mach Baron). Very similar in style, but it's giant robot vs giant robot. The DVD boxset is cheap too.

Ultrama Ace and Ultraman Taro Both had English dubbed episodes that were either done in Malaysia or the Philippines (they also used to show up on Indonesian/Malaysian/Philippine vcd box sets at the end of the 90's). Ultraman Gaia I am pretty sure was released here too but not sure if they were dubbed or subbed or both

The Ultraman BCI box set switches between dubbed and subtitles at times because the master US dub tracks were damaged and incomplete. If you find old tv broadcast versions for the same episodes you can get the missing english bits

Great box set, but also note Red Baron was not dubbed only subtitles, but very much worth getting

BCI restored everything to the episodes, which as I pointed out above meant that several scenes were added in that were cut and were never shown in the US. These did not have US audio tracks at all. This is because many edits were originally made during segments which had no dialogue only background sound effects and/or music so the replacement is fairly seamless.

The reasons BCI wasn't able to get clearer US dubbed tracks was because United Artist no longer had the tracks and although Tsuburaya does have them (presumably) BCI didn't license this through Tsuburaya. But rather Chaiyo who had more or less stolen the rights to Ultraman (albeit through a court of law and it was eventually reversed but that's another story for another day) and thus BCI couldn't get those pristine US dubs.

However even with the master US dubs, there waould still be in every episode, a few sections lasting several seconds long for which there is no corresponding English dub track, this is because those segments had never been recorded in English in the first place. So ultimately BCI would have had intercuts with Japanese audio anyway.

Anywho it's important for folks who've never seen the Ultraman DVDs to be aware of these cuts back and forth, because many folks thought their DVDs were messed up when these first came out. But they weren't, it was just BCI restoring the episodes the best they could.

I neglected to mention that Ultra Q was also dubbed in the US (not on DVD here but available on Veoh) and might be of some interest to the OP. It's the precursor to Ultraman, and set the stage, although no Ultra-beings actually appear in the show.

You can pick up most of the Ultraman shows through Japanese Super Heroes if you have to have DVDs. They tend to be a bit pricey and I'm not certain on their legality, but I'll leave that to your own judgement. If you're not as internet savvy or have to have DVDs, they're about as good as it gets.

Red Baron and Mach Baron are two different robots (and shows) but they are quite similar. Mach Baron is one of my favourite giant robots, there are so many great toys of that character that I wish I had.

Correct, but I do recall people finding some of those missing bits that BCI could not get from various tv airings and that was because of where BCI got the US dubs from. I am also not talking about scenes that were mainly cut out of the US (though for some reason I strongly believe the full uncut episodes were all dubbed, but cut down by US distributors afterwards), but ingeneral.

However regardless they did a good job with what they had to work with and I just wish the company itself did not fold.

Unless it is something new Ultra Q only had 1 episode dubbed in English as a test market for the US

                            PS: thanks for the link--
