Around 1980 I think, during a vacation in Wales, Aberystwyth, I walked into an old grocery store to get some food, and browsed through the "toy section", which was basically half a dozen Barbies. At the back, I found the Denys Fisher Tom Baker and on the shelf above it the Tardis. And on my way out, two Target Who novels. What a day!

At home, my general store (Green Valley) actually had the Mego ST crew in the window. Every month I picked up a new crew member...

We still have a General Store in business not far from my house, great place to get a burger and a Coke.

I shot it a few months ago. It was actually photographed and used as the album cover of one of Justin Wilson's records (cajun comic and cook)

My grandfather (who lived about 5 miles or so from my house) had a General Store across the street. I was pretty young and don't remember much about it other than he used to hand us some change and instruct us to buy him a can of deviled ham or sardines (which was typical dinner for him) and we could buy a candy bar or something small. The one thing that sticks out in my mind was "Cherry Smash" soda that they sold and was the only place that I remember seeing it.

Wow! That's awesome! I just can't even imagine seeing my old neighborhood while watching re-runs of a great TV show.

It's so sad that the shop is no longer there. I wish that I'd thought to visit Monty Python locations on one of my visits. That would have been much more interesting than a lot of the standard tourist spots.

We had a place called M.E. Moses 5 and Dime. Pretty much anything you wanted they had. It was the place to go for rack toys (little did I know what they were then) that you could buy for less than a buck. I vividly remember going there multiple times to buy replacement tracer discs for my Star Trek gun. they also had lot's of candy and just next door there was a drug store with a soda fountain. Great place to ride your bike to during the summer.

I remember that there used to be six different general stores at one time. Each had a different mix of comics and magazine. I would ride my bike to one to pick up Famous Monsters of Filmland and Starlog along with a few Marvel comics. I would go shopping to the biggest one with my mom and plead for DC Comics. Another general store had independent comics along with oddball candy so I would take my bike there. Two general stores were too far away from home to get to by bike and mom did not like shopping at them for some reason that I can't remember.

It was a gas station not a general store, but it had all a kid with a bike that could get there would need or want. I remember tons of 1 cent candy and a huge candy bar selection. And pop in the glass bottle with the opener at the register.Wax lips, pop bottle candy, yes candy cigeretts. Football cards, stickers Mad magazines, I spent a childhood fortune there. The funny thing is the store seemed to grow up with me,now its a State Store selling beer, wine, whiskey and all types of tobbacco and lotto tickets.Kinda weird huh.

I cant remember the name of it now but they had a revolving matchbox display with the cars behind a plastic covering. I would say 10 cars in a row up and down and maybe 20 rows in all. The cars had a number and you would tell them the number and they would get the car from a locked case. The cars came in a little cardboard box. Also i remember Topps baseball cards and sticker books. You would buy the pack of stickers and then find where they went in the book. Man i loved that store. Oh and i also bought all my old comics there.

It was not a general store but the convenience store I used to ride my bike to all the time was one of my favorite places to go. Inside I would get my Famous monsters of filmland, atomic fire balls, and my favorite to this day.....SLUSH PUPPIES! I love a black raspbery slush puppy! For a while they served them in these little mini baseball helmets. I had a whole collection of those little hemlets.

General store just seems so old timey to me... Like if you lived in the old west.

When did they start go out of vogue and what makes a general store a general store? (barrels?)

The convenience stores of my youth were usually chains... Like Mac's Milk, Beckers and 7-11. I'd play video game, buy comics, and there was penny candy like a gummy, but I preferred nickel or dime candy like fruit flavoured licorice tape. Sometimes I'd splurge on the expensive stuff like big league chew or gobstoppers or nerds.
