    Standard DVD question

This may sound silly but I have a question? DVD have been out since 1997-98
what does it mean when they say duel -layer as opposed to single layerd on the box?

duel layer means it can hold twice the information --- making the picture quality 2 times better.

Imagine an old record album ... now imagine the same album being able to hold 2 albums

going back to the album ... imagine the first album plays like a regular record .... now imagine the same record with super deep grooves ... that's where the second album is.

your phonograph (dvd player) can read both shallow and deep grooves (dual layer)

Hey Mikey that is not exactly true. Without getting too techy, It really depends on how well the film was transferred over. You can have it larger in size than your standard 4.37 gigs and still look like crap. Most dual layers are that size due to the amount of extras on the disc and trying to keep a higher quality level for them. It also may be related to more audio tracks being added that jacks up the film size (like adding in a dts track along with commentaries) as well as if the film is super long and still wanting to maintain a decent quality level with as minimal compression as possible and not wanting to split it across 2 dvds
