I've watch that decline forever. What I truly miss is the Showcase Cinemas I went to as a kid where I saw King Kong, Jaws, and Star Wars. Such great memories. They don't make theaters like that anymore.

For me, I can always keep my neighborhood and school just the same in my mind.
I've done the google street view thing myself, only to sit there transfixed for hours wallowing in self pity.

I try not to do that anymore. My Ozone Park, Queens is no more.

When they've all been gutted or torn down it does suck, but sometimes it's better than what's become of the ones still standing.
It pains me to go by my childhood house that was in our family since it was built in the 1860's. The land was all sold off to developers and now the old manor is strangled by 90's houses built by children. I'd rather it not even be there.

Buildings have a certain lifespan...they have to be torn down from time to time...we don't want them collapsing on people...do we...

I lived in the same house all of my life and had to sell it after my folks passed away when I was nineteen and moved away to graduate school. Hardest drive off I've ever had to do. I sold it to a family with kids (then) and its still there. I pass it sometimes on the way to the interstate if I'm going out of town. I still have dreams about returning and walking through it. As for music stores as referred to in the previous post, Florence, Alabama used to be full of them. There's only one left now. It still sells Vinyl and its a very cool place. I spend money there whenever I can to help. But its a one of a kind.

Sometimes I use Google Earth to see all of the places I once called home.....some of the towns are in better shape than others. What really bums me out is how independent book stores have all but vanished as the mom and pop bookseller can't compete with digital and Amazon.
