Great film...if the remake goes ahead it would have to undergo some serious rewriting methinks as todays audiences would see the original story as slow paced and the overtones not as menacing nowadays.

True , but the original had the "cold war" overtones and although the "nuclear" threat is still present today it isn't felt as heavily as it did back then. I still think it would have to be heavily rewritten to hold the same impact. Not only that, Hollywoods love affair with remakes over the last 5-10 years has produced nothing to spectactular yet, so the chances are it will be ruined.
