    >I own about a 175 DVD's...

I got about 400, AND 1500 vhs tapes. You wanna talk BITTER....?

    >they finally got everyone to abandon Thier VHS...then emediately came out with a "TWO" new formats

I expect it'll get worse over the next few years. When it comes to entertainment NOBODY cares about production; it's all about getting a lock on distribution. That means being the one with the latest and greatest format.... AND a mad dash to stay ahead of the piraters.

If you get the PS3 you can buy a bluetooth remote so it will work just like a normal dvd player. It's easyer than trying to controll a the unit as a player with a game controller

Yeah, I also highly recommend picking up the Bluetooth remote for the PS3.

I personally don't think that Blu-ray discs will replace DVDs. Based on what I've seen, the average person thinks DVDs are "good enough" (many already think that watching regular DVDs on an upconverting player makes them high def, even though they are not). DVD represented a big leap in both picture quality and ease of use and convenience over VHS, so the format became very popular. Blu-ray offers better video and audio over DVD, but it's not enough of a difference to make a lot of people invest more money into a new format. That plus the fact that the general public has been woefully undereducated in all things hi def, creating a lot of confusion or apathy, probably means that Blu-ray won't become as mainstream as DVDs are, but rather a niche format for home theatre and technology nuts (like myself). Not as niche as laserdiscs were, but nowhere near as mainstream as DVDs. Just my opinion.

know where you're coming from here...my vhs collection is in its 3000s and I have only managed to transfer some stuff onto dvd(mostly documentries that would never be released), and the rest is worse than junk...even charity shops are reluctant to take vhs now(my wife refuses to allow me to just throw them out as it cost so much money to accrue them). I've now got about 1400 dvd titles but about half of those never came out on vhs so i'm always playing catch up with my movie collection.
I love film and want the best but I just can't afford to keep replacing my collection...no matter how crisp the picture or how tantalising the extras...

For those of you guys who are picking up PS3's I have a question (not sarcastic, an honest queston) - Why did you choose it over Xbox 360? Whatever the reason is fine, I'm just curious.

At the time it was the cheepest blu-ray player. I own 2 games and 35 movies.

So far there has been no regional coding so we can share blu-ray DVD’s with our friends over seas.
Here is a site that already sells them.

I have a friend at work who is a huge technophile, and he was patiently waiting this war out. He'll be glad to hear its over.

Me, lump me in with the crowd who thinks regular DVD is plenty good enough. If the players get cheap enough, I will pick one up when my current DVD player goes kaput. But I don't see myself chasing after this until then.

I'd have to say the biggest reason would be quality. The Xbox 360 has a much better game library and online play but the system's failure rate is unbelievable. Some people have already gone through as many as six consoles because of the dreaded "Red Rings of Death" issue that's plagued the system since its launch.

The PS3 is extremely reliable and once developers are able to tap into the full strength of the system I think the games for it will be incredible. The fact that it can play blue ray movies is a big plus too considering how the format war is going.

Agree 100%. I'm not much of a gamer, so the 360's better game library wasn't a factor for me. But the 360's high failure rate, and very noisy fan were a big factor for me not buying one.

On the other hand, I've heard almost nothing about people having PS3s crap out on them, it's pretty quiet, it plays Blu-ray discs, and I think it has great potential that has only been partially tapped at this point. I surf the internet on my TV with it, I can use it to show pictures and home videos of my son on the big TV when my family visits, etc. (I realize that I could do some of these things on the 360 too). For everything it can do, and will do, I think it's well worth the money (and I bought it a year ago before the price drops).

The System failure was never an issue for Me(3 red Rings)...because I bought Mine at Best Buy, with the 2 year warranty. It dies...I bring it in...they give Me a brand new one in the Box...I walk out the same Day with a new one! And the problem has been fixed on the newer Models(I now own the black Elite, with 120 GB Hard Drive). When the last one died...I just payed the diiference($79.00)...and got the Elite.

And PS3 will NEVER have HALO!
