When I was in the USMC, my job was Russian Linguist... but that's been 20 years ago, bit rusty by now. IF you dropped me in Moscow, I could probably get by.

I speak pretty good Greek, but my reading and writing aren't so great.
Passing on languages to kids or grandkids can be hard work. My parents are from Greece, and it was super important to them that me and my siblings speak our mother tongue. I attended language classes on Saturday mornings both in primary and high school.... and hated every minute of it, but kinda do understand the reasoning behind it.
Now my nieces have to go to Greek school, too. Mum is super stoked that her grandkids are learning some Greek, but without the language being spoken in the home, it is harder for them to develop a strong workable knowlegde of the language.Comment

Hmmmm....
Other than English, I can get by in Japanese. (Although I sound more fluent than I am.) I can usually follow French, but my pronunciation is horrid; so I try not to speak it. I used to be able to get by in Hindi, but I've forgotten most of it. ANd I can read heiroglyphs.... a bit.... if I have my notebook with me.
