Does anyone here speak a second or third language ?
I have very limited Spanish, even more limited Japanese and embarrassingly limited Haitian Creole. I can also say "All done" and "Good Morning" in Portuguese, but that's as far as I got.
Also - I was able to navigate enough French to get an attendants attention and ask if they spoke English at Charles de Gaulle, then when they said yes I asked them an involved question about where to find two gates in Catalan, because I had been in Barcelona for two weeks and as Americans go, I am that idiot.
Oh! I also know a few phrases in other languages. (Greek, Urdu, Swedish, etc) I can understand bits of them but not much. (It's all from former girlfriends... don't judge me.)
I can read and write Danish, Norwegian, and Swedish at about a first grade level. That's it. I refuse to speak it, because I'm told I have a very heavy accent and I get self-conscious about it. Plus, I tend to get them confused--they're similar languages, but not identical.
All my great-grandparents spoke Dutch. One set was from Vriesland and the others were from Zuid Holland and Gelderland. I don't speak it myself , but I get the general gist of written and spoken Dutch. Because of the similarities, I understand a good amount of German, as well.
I took 4 years of Spanish in high school (and the minimum required in college) which means I can easily get lost in Mexico, Spain, Miami, or certain parts of L.A. Did not take any other Foreign Language in college - wish I had.
