    My band's last set list

Digging through some boxes I stumbled across a folded piece of paper I haven't seen for a while. It's been going on 14 years now since I've performed on stage, so this thread makes me feel very, very old. This was from a show we did in 1998. We obviously weren't exactly an in-demand act.

There are some awesome tunes in our list, but looking back with complete clarity and wisdom, I can see why we didn't really get a lot of gigs. It wasn't from lack of talent, but song choice. At the time we thought we were being diverse. Reality is we were all over the place without any real identity. Most cover bands have a range or comfort level. This was kinda out there. We would have been better served picking songs the audience would like as opposed to what we were into.

I was, by far, the least talented of the group as the others were all music majors/teachers/instructors. I was more or less a self-taught schlub who happened to be overheard at a soundcheck dicking around. After all this time has passed, I don't know if I could do all of those tunes now, but I know a couple of them I could now do better with a little maturity under my belt. Here's what we played in our last show. The songs with asterisks are my vocals for better or worse.

    Set 1

    Kiss of Death – Dokken*
Man on the Silver Mountain – Rainbow*
I was Made for Loving You – Kiss
You’ve Got Another Thing Coming – Judas Priest
    Renegade – Styx*
    Mother – Danzig*
Thunder Kiss 65 – White Zombie
    Magic Power – Triumph*
    Would – Alice in Chains

    Set 2

Still of the Night – Whitesnake*
    Can’t Get Enuff – Winger
    Somebody’s Out There – Triumph*
    Chasing Shadows – Kansas*
    Highway to Hell – ACDC
Man in the Box – Alice in Chains
    Into the Fire – Dokken*
    Paranoid – Black Sabbath
When I’m with You – Sherriff*
Pull Me Under – Dream Theater*
I almost had a psychic girlfriend but she dumped me before we met.

      I dunno man.

I've played and mixed for many bands. I've busted my chops doing originals and danced around the songwriter circles. I was foh engineer for a national tourer and spent way more time behind the wheel of an Econoline than I would really like to admit.

And the most fun I have with music is playing in a band doing whatever songs we happen to fancy. covers, originals, spontanious pickups, whatever. Well, that and just spending time fiddling around with a jam or two on the front porch.

If you had fun playing the songs, then it was time well spent. Wisdom, clarity, and maturity are somewhat overrated - imho.

^^^You're right. I tend to overthink stuff like that. I was surrounded by seriously trained and educated musicians, so I didn't have the same pedigree they did. I was still fun. The challenge we had was trying to make the audience like songs they hadn't heard of before.

I think it would be cool if some of us could find a way to write and record a Mego Museum theme song...

That's a pretty cool set list, Random. I would've checked you guys out back then, for sure. I don't know if I've ever seen a band apart from Triumph play two of their songs.

I totally love Rik Emmett. Gil was a great vocalist as well. It's a travesty of epic proportions they never really caught on here in the states like they should have. We practiced Tears in the Rain, but never played it. We had enough fringe material.
