He's only 7 goals behind the all time Barcelona record already...and he's only 24 years old. The guy is a beast.

By far the best player in the world playing today. Some say he is the best ever to play the game, which will eventually be known in time. He might be short comparatively, but I have never seen anyone like him who has the combination of speed, foot skills, striking ability all wrapped into one. I can't think of a defender in the world who can handle him one on one. In most of the games I have seen him play, he is usually double teamed and still beats them....incredible.

Best in the world are some massive shoes to fill and they fit him perfectly. An amazing player to watch.

Yep, Messi will definitely be up there with the greats when he hangs up his boots. Hes not doing to badly at the mo. Also Ronaldo of Real Madrid is not far behind.

I'd have to agree with Pele when he was asked if Messi is the best ever:

"When Messi's scored 1,283 goals like me, when he's won three World Cups, we'll talk about it," Pelé told Le Monde. "Football changes. Records are there to be broken, but it will be hard to break mine.

"People always ask me: 'When is the new Pelé going to be born?' Never. My father and mother have closed the factory."

When all is said and done i do feel Messi will have the numbers to rival Pele. Pele does sound a bit arrogant but if it wasn't for him there would not be nearly the interest in the sport here in the states. When we were kids who didn't act like Pele when kicking the game winning goal while playing. He got the ball rolling (pun intended). Now our kids are the next generation and soon our kids, kids will keep the game growing in popularity. Maybe not enough to beat the main sports here in the US but enough to put Soccer with the other majors. Also i feel the fact that i have started to enjoy it more is because my favorite sport is Hockey. The 2 have so much similarity. I can love a 1-0 hockey game as much as i can enjoy a 5-4 game or even higher.

Messi stills has a bit to go before I call him the best ever. For one...he needs to win a World cup with Argentina. I mean, that should not be his only gauge to be the all time great...but it sure will help, that, or at least play great during World Cup match like Johann Cruyff did in his losing efforts...Messi has NOT done that yet...he was pretty average the last time around.

                  My current list:

                  1. Pele
                  2. Diego Maradona
                  3. Franz Beckenbauer
                  4. Johann Cruyff
                  5. Zinedine Zidane

Messi...while awesome...and might eventually pass them all...just doesn't deserve to be top five at the tender age of 24 at the moment...too soon....and too much more to accomplish out there.
