You Tube "Do you think I am pretty" trend

It's a new trend. Teenage (sometimes younger) girls posting videos asking if they are pretty. Just saw a story about it. Kind of a dangerous thing to do with all the nuts out there. This one has over 4 million hits

Mego Museum parents, watch your kids' internet back.

You seem pretty cool, but I wouldn't say pretty is the best adjective.

Seriously though, these postings are sad to see.

Look, in my view these kids are not too different from us as kids essentially. These are insecure girls wanting validation, especially if they are getting teased. The only difference between us and them is that we couldn't upload videos to be seen by potential millions to seek that validation. Of course, they don't realize that this sort of thing is a sicko magnet.

The worst part is that they're going to strangers to gain validation for something superficial. The next to the worst part is it's on the internet where everyone's like, "OMG GO KILL URSELF U R TEH SUXXORZ!!1" to a kid. My niece would write these Facebook statuses like, "I wish I were pretty," just fishing for compliments. I told her if someone was hateful their opinion didn't matter and her friends would tell her what she wanted to hear anyway, so their opinion didn't matter, either. And by fishing for compliments, she's laying bare her insecurities to be picked apart--kids can be cruel, so don't give them ammo.

She won't listen. I'm old and can't relate to being a teen and wanting people to like me. That must be some new thing.

I think that some of those that do this are trying to use YouTube as a inexpensive vehicle to find a dating partner if you will.

Then there are those as mego73 mentioned that are just doing it for validation. Perhaps they have very low self esteem about themselves so they depend on the opinions of total strangers as a form of advice.

Then there are also those that are wanting to make a popularity contest out of it like being liked a jillion times on Facebook.

It's not that kids have changed, it's just the methods and risks involved have. Most teens want to be popular and liked and it's always been that way. Kids don't care what their parents think because they are not "cool". It's the opinion of their peers that seem to matter most.

Now instead of going to the mall, movies, parties etc to see what people in your area might like you, they use the web to see what people all over the world might like them. The only problem is they don't realize the dangers of doing this. Instead of having one or two sleazeballs follow you around the mall, you have thousands of sleazeballs that can see you on the internet.

I am starting to see it first hand as a parent. Our 11 year old started middle school this year and all of a sudden, she has taken an interest in her appearance and started noticing boys. She hasn't posted any youtube videos (she knows how much trouble she would be in if she did) but has started to use youtube as an outlet to look at other teens and see what they are thinking and doing. I watch her take these teen quizzes, Are You Popular?, Are You Hot? etc.

Sadly, there is very little that can be done about it. Everything has become so digital that the only way to stop a kid, would be to take away everything (cell phones, computers, ipods, ipads etc) and lock them up in their rooms.

This reminds me of pretty skinny woman telling people "oh, i'm so fat and ugly"

They feed on people saying "no you're not"

                      It's mostly a woman thing

Were in a wannabe culture driven by reality TV shows. Youtube is just an potential extension of that.

Not all of them are just vain.

In our culture and media women are judged much more harshly on their apparence then men. Women starting at a very young age are conditioned to feel badly about their bodies. Never pretty enough. Never thin enough and so on. No matter what they are it isn't good enough. Not surprisingly, there are pretty skinny women that truly see themselves as fat and ugly and will seek validation from others in a hopeless neverending struggle to feel better about themselves.
You are a bold and courageous person, afraid of nothing. High on a hill top near your home, there stands a dilapidated old mansion. Some say the place is haunted, but you don't believe in such myths. One dark and stormy night, a light appears in the topmost window in the tower of the old house. You decide to investigate... and you never return...
