USA beats Italy 1-0 in Soccer!!!

First time it has ever happened and on Italian soil. Funny part is it didn't even hit most local news stations five minute sports update even though the match occurred in the afternoon our time yesterday.

It is amazing how much the whole world loves soccer/futbol, yet how little Americans (including myself) even notice. I really do find it a wonder.

A great result for the US ! Whilst on English soil we were treated to a 3-2 defeat from the Dutch

I had a couple friends on facebook comment on this. I tracked down on online stream and I got to watch the last 10 minutes or so. The announcers were freaking out (in a reserved fashion)!

I got to see a couple FIFA qualifying matches (Belize v. Guatamala and Belize v. Trinadad) this fall.

I watched the last World Cup but hadn't thought about soccer since I was about 7 before that.
        My Updated Want List:
        Comic book original art
1970s Hulk or Spider-man metal garbage can
        Custom Mego Nexus, Grendel

Have lots of comics and Marvel Legends figures for trades. Thanks!

imo, It's just the lack of scoring, low amount of physical contact allowed and the announcers.

Perfect example why soccer will never be as big as the NFL, MLB, NBA, and NHL here in the States.

Historic win for team USA...but aside from hardcore soccer fans...nobody here gives a damn...sad but true.

I still think it will be big in the U.S. but still a decade or two away. Again, it goes back to my broken record theory about the huge increase in quality youth soccer. Growing up, most of my teammates were the sons of 1st generation European, Mexico, Central, and South American. The dads who volunteered to coach knew nothing about the sport and generally had to read everything from a book. Playing competitive club level was a really big deal. Now, there are incredibly high levels of play (I have watched 12 year old boys with soccer skills way beyond anything I ever learned) and my 15 year daughter's skill level is past what I ever learned. We do attend a few soccer matches a year (last year we saw MANU v Barcelona at FEDEX) and in a few months we will see (USA vs Brazil at FEDEX). As the USA becomes a consistent top 10 team (which will happen in the next 20 years) and as parents are starting to understand the sport from watching their kids play, kids grew up playing will continue to love the game, the MLS starts attracting some top talent, it will become big. Not NFL big but I could see it consistently filling stadiums that hold 30-40K people. Last year's MANU/Barcelona game was sold out at a stadium that holds 100K people and the ticket prices were comparable to an NFL game.

                  [QUOTE

=Zemo;881792]imo, It's just the lack of scoring,

Now imo the fact that it is hard to score is what makes it intresting unlike say Basketball where it so easy to score it just becomes boring.

I did not know it had attracted that sort of support, that is very encouraging, surely the media must have taken note of this.

I agree with you though, if this generation of kids is playing soccer then when they grow up and become the consumer they will want soccer on the tv.

I witnessed the same thing a couple of years earlier when A.C. Milan played Chelsea in Baltimore, MD. Kids in the U.S. know the top players in the world and it is rare that they ever get to see them play live. I have been to a lot of MLS games including one MLS Cup game and can say without a doubt that the level of play from any one of the 4 clubs that we personally saw MANU/Barcelona/Chelsea/A.C. Milan is far better than anything than anything the MLS has to offer at this point. I also think that Soccer is a sport that is more fun to watch live than on tv. Even though scores are generally low, the action is so intense, that your stomach is in your throat most of the game.
