My son has an epiphany about my collection

My toy collection has been around for my 5 year old son's entire existence so far. Since a baby, he's grown up looking at all the stuff on my shelves, occasionally asking questions about who certain guys were and stuff like that. Never once did he ask to play with something or try to grab something on his own, which I was relieved about. He just knew that they were "daddy's stuff".

The other day he was looking at my Mattel Godzilla and noticed the red lever on the back of his neck. "What's that for, daddy?" he asked. I told him that the lever activated Godzilla's "tongue of fire" and demonstrated how it worked. He then thought about what he had seen for a few minutes, and finally said "So, these are like toys then?". That caught me completely off guard, I told him of course they were. Just like his toys except they were from when I was a kid. These were the kinds of stuff I used to play with.

Anyway, I thought it was really funny. He's grown up with this whole room full of old toys in the house but he never really thought of them as toys before. Maybe because he never saw me playing with them (I do that when he's asleep ). They are always just sitting on shelves, so perhaps he never made the connection before. Maybe he equated them to Grandma's old collectors plates and nick-nacks in her dining room or something, I dunno. But luckily, even with this new realization, he still doesn't ask if he can play with my toys. Whew.

Thanks for the cute and cool story. It is funny regarding his thought process as it pertains to how he views your toys as "daddy's stuff". You have him trained/raised well.

I can just see the future many years from now. Most toys as we known them will probably be found at the science museum.

Tour guide (in a sarcastic tone) - Big yawn! And now we are coming to the section of the museum called "toys". The tour guide rolls his eyes. The kids begin pointing and lauging and looking at them like we would probably view a cave man's toys today.
Enjoy what you like, and let others enjoy what they like. (C) Azrak 2009

Too much space. Need more toys!

That's really cute. But you know, when he gets a little older, that may change, (asking to play w/ your toys, I mean). I think curiosity will eventually get the better of him.

Luckily, his complete lack of interest in action figures, monster and robot toys is working in my favour so far. Now, if I collected Legos and Hot Wheels, I'd be worried.

I tried to do even better, I bought him a couple of his very own Megos, but he barely touches them.

They're toys, but they are like artifacts from a long ago, forgotten era
that might not pass for toys at first glance of the modern eye!

that's cool bro, at least he'll grow up knowing the difference between collecting pieces and playing toys...I know my nephews don't know the difference and everytime they swing by I have to lock up my toy room I found my zartan and swamp skier in the toilet one day

                      Imagine if he'd had flushed?

Interesting. There are superhero, monster, and robot Lego building kits. You would think he would get the crossover. But, like you said, the toys have always been there and have become a fixture to him.

My five yo has been watching me build, repair, collect, and sell toys for his entire life. He has respect for my area and my things. But then he also has his share of the overflow from my shop. He does not try to take things down and play with them, but (especially now that he is 5) I am constantly fielding questions. "Does Dr. Evil have a car? Can he change his brains out. Is Godzilla bigger than Rodan. How many Godzillas can fly?".......... etc. Maddening and extremely fun at the same time.

Oh - and I told him the monster toys wander around at night, so he never goes into my office alone.
