Help choosing new internet

I've decided to upgrade from dial-up (insert joke here ) Looking for help in choosing speed and type.Cable or dsl.

Cable is the fastest and the ONLY way to go. If you doubt this...trying playing video games on ANY of the others. Being a hardcore video gamer, I know this to be true...trust me.

I also agree that cable is faster. It isn't even a point of argument although your local Bell company would like to make you think otherwise.

DSL requires constant rebooting of the modem as well. I have had it both at work and at both of the homes I own and it was a hassle at all three places. Cable is MUCH faster and hassle free.

Around here you will pay about twice as much for cable as you do DSL. And we are only about 1/4 mile from the substation for AT&T so our speed is pretty fast for DSL. I don't play any games on my PC since I have a PS3 for that so I can't comment on how well it works for that but I do use Netflix and download tons of stuff including videos and don't have any issues with the speed. We run at 2.6 Mbps download speed (I just ran a speed test) just so you have an idea of possible options.

Of course I am also a bit biased as I hate our local cable company and over 20 years ago swore that I would never give them my business again and I haven't.

We had that problem. Here at the shop I run a server with 5 other computers in the network and have a DSL router plus another router for the network. Our network router started to die so I upgraded to a nicer wireless unit and now we have Wi-Fi too. It's nice for my wife as she usually brings her notebook in to work here so she can play her Facebook games all day long with no problems.


When our network router was starting to go (and it was pretty old) we noticed we were having a somewhat constant rebooting of our internet connection. Once I replaced it the problem went away.

Verizon Fios is the way to go if you can get it in your area. Fiber Optic and F'n Fast...Great quality video too. Their bundle packages are a good deal. Again, if it's available in your area. If it's a choice between Cable and DSL...Cable is the way to go.

I don't game so that has no impact on me. I have had both and cable is the best IMO.

I can only get DSL in my area so I have to go with that.

In our rural area, DSL costs me $19.99 a month. The same speed cable would cost me $39.98 a month after a flippin' $500 fee to install it. Not once in all these years has my router ever given me trouble. And since the phone lines are all safely buried, my DSL doesn't does not go out in storms like the overhead cable lines. Because of all that, around here, at least, I don't know anyone who still has cable. But, in all fairness, I think the cable situation is different in large cities where, both service-wise and price-wise, it is a viable option.
