The short version is that even if your 4 year old agrees to let you smash one of his Hot Wheels with a sledge Hammer just to see it "kaboom" - don't do it!
Some back ground:
I have been collecting Hot Wheels and other diecast for the last 6 years. It's a lot cheaper to buy my dream cars in 1/64 scale than 1/1 - they take up less room too! I have 2 boys and both have more than plenty of Hot Wheels- and they don't really get played with much. At the moment the 7 y.o favorite toys are his Legos. The 4 y.o favorite is the 3' Godzilla and Ultra Man figures and monsters. I don't even know if either would put Hot Wheels on their top 5 favorites.
Now the longer version and the victum (a 2010 release of a 67 Dodge Charger):

Ok- so, I had a small sledge hammer for a little back yard project and had recently rescued this 67 Charger from the weeds. My boys have plenty of Hot Wheels and hadn't missed this one for how ever long it had been hiding in the tall grass- so.....I asked my 4 year old if he wanted to see me "kaboom" it- he agreed- but was a little reluctant- I should have gone with the "bad idea" thought and not done it- but he agreed- so KABOOM! and then the tears came....he just wasn't ready for the permanent outcome of the sledge hammer customizing tool.
I apologized and he calmed down and I thought all was forgotten until Monday morning when my wife wakes me up to ask me why our son was crying about me hitting his car with a hammer- and he must have dreamed that...right??!!! Uh....welll...uh....not really....and told her the story. Sigh....
I posted my story and request on the big trade board - a.k.a Hot Wheels Collectors.com and someone posted they could hook me up with the right replacement car.
So, lesson learned! Though I'm pretty sure if the whole incident had happened with my 7 y.o instead of the 4y.o- we might still be outside smashing cars- as I'm sure he would have pounded them flat as pancakes and then looked for as many victims as possible and would still be asking when we could smash Hot Wheels again with the hammer!
I think I will keep the "one hit wonder" as a reminder- of what NOT to do!!!
Anyone ever scarred their kids psyche by combining a toy and some form of destruction??
