Bad dad + sledgehammer = sad son

The short version is that even if your 4 year old agrees to let you smash one of his Hot Wheels with a sledge Hammer just to see it "kaboom" - don't do it!

    Some back ground:

I have been collecting Hot Wheels and other diecast for the last 6 years. It's a lot cheaper to buy my dream cars in 1/64 scale than 1/1 - they take up less room too! I have 2 boys and both have more than plenty of Hot Wheels- and they don't really get played with much. At the moment the 7 y.o favorite toys are his Legos. The 4 y.o favorite is the 3' Godzilla and Ultra Man figures and monsters. I don't even know if either would put Hot Wheels on their top 5 favorites.

Now the longer version and the victum (a 2010 release of a 67 Dodge Charger):

Ok- so, I had a small sledge hammer for a little back yard project and had recently rescued this 67 Charger from the weeds. My boys have plenty of Hot Wheels and hadn't missed this one for how ever long it had been hiding in the tall grass- so.....I asked my 4 year old if he wanted to see me "kaboom" it- he agreed- but was a little reluctant- I should have gone with the "bad idea" thought and not done it- but he agreed- so KABOOM! and then the tears came....he just wasn't ready for the permanent outcome of the sledge hammer customizing tool.

I apologized and he calmed down and I thought all was forgotten until Monday morning when my wife wakes me up to ask me why our son was crying about me hitting his car with a hammer- and he must have dreamed that...right??!!! Uh....welll...uh....not really....and told her the story. Sigh....

I posted my story and request on the big trade board - a.k.a Hot Wheels Collectors.com and someone posted they could hook me up with the right replacement car.

So, lesson learned! Though I'm pretty sure if the whole incident had happened with my 7 y.o instead of the 4y.o- we might still be outside smashing cars- as I'm sure he would have pounded them flat as pancakes and then looked for as many victims as possible and would still be asking when we could smash Hot Wheels again with the hammer!

I think I will keep the "one hit wonder" as a reminder- of what NOT to do!!!

Anyone ever scarred their kids psyche by combining a toy and some form of destruction??

Thank goodness that it was only a 2010 67' Dodge Charger and not a 1995 Treasure Hunt Camaro. I think you would both be crying then.

I am glad to hear that you have found a replacement and life will be good again as your kid once knew it.
Enjoy what you like, and let others enjoy what they like. (C) Azrak 2009

Too much space. Need more toys!

Well, being a Camaro lover- I wouldn't have let them have one to leave outside!

But, you are correct, if anyone took a hammer to a 95 Hunt- it would be very painfull$$!!

The 95 Camaro hunt is not the only pricey one out there. There are quite a few more as well.

Just wait until you hear a pounding outside and you go out to find your son smashing you 1:1 car in the garage with a sledgehammer

You must mean the drive way since the garage is full of everything else but a car!

              And well, since I drive a soul-less 4 door japan-o-box - I might even help him!!

No real reason to expect the response you got from your boy, so don't feel bad.
I prolly scar my kids in all kids of ways I don't know, but I know I couldn't upset my boy like this. He only ever cared about his video games.

We bought him some Max Steel action figures, but he destroyed them (gleefully) by dragging them behind his bike and enlisting his little sister to help him rip the arms out "Braveheart" style.

I think all parents scar their children- it's nearly inevitable. I don't feel too bad about it- I'm sure it will make an amusing story when he's older.

Too bad about Max Steel- that sounds like a rough way to go!! Nice picture you used for visual enhancement! Maybe it could be titled: Max's last adventure!

I don't really remember any of my Hot Wheels, etc... cars except for my James Bond Corgi. I'm pretty sure it still resides under my grandfather's furnace.
