    The Day The Music Died

I'm a big time early Rock & Roll fan and out of all the classic rockers, Buddy Holly is my absolute favorite. Today is the 53rd anniversary of his tragic plane crash in 1959. I remember as a kid WCBS FM always made sure to talk about the influence he had on Rock & Roll and play a lot of his music throughout the day. In recent years, no one really mentions it anymore. Seems such a shame for one of the truly great innovators in music so I thought I'd bring it up here.

He truly was a gifted artist and his music still sounds great.

HUGE Buddy Holly fan here as well...I liked him way more than Elvis Presley...just don't tell my mother...she's a HUGE Elvis fan...and she'd kill me...lol.

Let's not forget Ritchie Valens and the Great Bopper (and the pilot) either...

I am also a HUGE Buddy Holly fan. Our dog's name was Buddy Holly Miller! Awesome music and a truly great pioneer. The Beatles were heavily influenced by Buddy. Have you seen the VHI Behind The Music episode "The Day the Music Died"? Awesome piece. Paul McCartney produced a documentary many years ago that is a treasure of info as well.

The Paul McCartney documentary was called The Real Buddy Holly Story. Not only did he produce it, he was the host of it. Really well done film that takes you on a tour of Holly's life and interviews many people that were close to him. It also cleans up a lot of what was left out or changed in the Gary Busey movie. I don't think its in print anymore though.

Add me to the list of big time Buddy Holly Fans. I read his biography once every few years since I was a kid. I always figured his career would have followed a similar course to Roy Orbison's. He could have sang any type of music that he wanted to.
I love almost all the early 50's RnR guys, but Him, Roy and JLL will always be my favorites.

We have a place here in Green Bay called the Riverside Ballroom. It is one of the last places (actually, their second to last performance) Buddy, Richie and the Big Bopper played. They do a big tribute concert to them every year on the anniversary of that show (which was a few days ago now). Great performers.

I'm with you D, although they are neck in neck with me. But Elvis takes the top spot. I've been listening to my Elvis Live in Vegas playlist all day at work so far. I actually have everyone liking it here at work too, I listen too it so often.

Did anyone hear the Waylon Jennings story on what happened at the time? Unbelievable stuff. The bus had been freezing up a lot and getting stuck on the road, that's why Buddy decided to fly to the next tour stop, so he could get some laundry done. Buddy originally chartered the plane for him and his band, Waylon played bass. One of the other band members gave his seat to the Big Bopper for some reason. Valens had a cold and begged Waylon to let him have his seat. Waylon finally agreed and saw Buddy soon before the plane took off. Buddy gave him some grief for giving up his seat and told Waylon jokingly he hoped the bus froze up again AND Waylon tells him "I hope your dang plane crashes"! That's the last words he had with Buddy, said it haunted him every day. Can you imagine that.

Here's a great recount of that story. It's #3 on the list.

Elvis lived to his 40s...Holly died at 22...comparing them head-to-head is a bit unfair for Holly...he died even before his prime...had he lived...man...imagine that.

Holly was a true musician and songwriter...Elvis was a great performer and singer...let's call it even then...
