It's a good flick. But, it also has a very uncomfortable/awkward sex scene in it. Then again, I guess my feelings about the scene are tainted by the fact that I watched the movie with my minister uncle.

The one thing that bothers me about the movie is that both parties are speaking in English (although there's a scene in the beginning were it explains this transaction)...that takes the realism out of the equation.

Jude Law should've been talking in Russian...and Ed Harris should've talking in German...that...or just get a Russian and German actor.

Great scenes...great story...but the language thing kinda didn't work for me.

There was also an unnecessary love story.

Now...for stuff like ancient Greece and Rome...then to me that's a bit different...for some reason, I can accept that more...I guess WWII is just too recent...and film is available for that time period.

        But overall...it's a good movie...

P.S. BTW, the real life Vasily Zaytsev...was truly a badarse...

Agreed Hector! I had JUST left acting school when this was released so I was all about doing accents and dialects etc. It was SO horrible seeing them speak english...

Good story though. Very well done and I thought they did an admirable job of re-creating the horrors of Stalingrad. I've read several accounts and they seemed to have nailed it.

One of the crucial areas of the battle was the fighting on the Mamayev Kurgan, a huge artificial hill which is actually an ancient burial mound.
              Pretty spooky stuff!

Ed Harris is great in this movie. But he's pretty much great in everything he's appeared in.

And I would rather them have unaccented English dialogue that than have actors doing unconvincing accents... (Harrison Ford's Russian accent in K-19 The Widowmaker comes to mind.)

If they want to cast native German and Russian actors, fine, I don't mind subtitles, but if they want box office returns obviously they're going to cast known English speaking actors for the target market.

The way they addressed the issue in The Hunt For Red October seems to be the ideal solution, with a clear and stylish transition from Russian dialogue to English at the beginning of the movie.
