Great pics Samurai, thanks for sharing.I love the old temples also, there is just something magical about them.
Probably all the spirits left behind from all those who were sacrificed and had their hearts taken out while alive?

I love it. I found a great family run hole in the wall place that I would have lunch at every day with the locals. Folks I was traveling with were a bit squeamish about the old ladies at the counter tearing the big piles of meat with their bare hands, but it didn't bother me none. Never got sick eating in any place like this one.

They made a terrific enchilada as well. My team reported that the following year they went back, the family running the place was asking about "mr Big Appetite".

They also serve it at my favourite Burrito place in Toronto, run Mexican expats. The Chorizo is killer as well.

I'm really jealous that you guys can get great Mexican food in the US and Canada.
I got into tacos al pastor in a big way when I was in Mexico.. so freakin tasty

We ate street food with gusto while over there... with surprisingly few adverse effects.

The ceremonial sites at Uxmal and Kabah (known as the Puuc region) are truly beautiful, as Samurai has said. Another great memory that I have is swimming in the cenotes, the underground lakes, which I was hesitant to do 'cos I'm not a big water person, but my wife was super keen to do.
I'm so glad that I got over my hesitation, because they are spectacular places.

We travelled as far as Tikal in Guatemala, and on the way got to visit one of my all-time favorite Mexican archaelogical site, Yaxchillan (it's pronounced Yash-chill-ann) right on the border with Guatemala.
These ruins are partly overgrown, and it is easy to imagine how the first Western explorers felt when first seeing and experiencing them.

On the other side of the country, we went to Guadalajara and Taxco, but Mexico City is really still my first love.

I would love to go back some day...

Post up some pics of that trip! I keep trying to get to the Usumacinta River but my wife and I enjoy our time in Valladolid so much that we're going back again this year. One of these days we'll get all the way over to Bonompak/Yaxchilan/Palenque.

Totally forgot I had these in my gallery from the LAST time we had this conversation here at the Mego Museum (April of '10 according to the date-stamp)

View from the Sun Pyramid at Teotihuacan, near Mexico City. It's hard to illustrate just how darn steep those stairs are!

I went up those as a kid...but today...no way...as I've gotten older...I'm now more afraid of heights than ever...

Amazing how Pre-Columbian people..with no wheel, or heavy animals such as horses and ox...managed to build those enormous pyramids...still boggles my mind.

At least, back when it was an inhabited city, once you got to the top they let you have a little lie down on a special stone........
