Was is steampunk exactly? I've heard that word used, but I don't really know what that means.

Steampunk is kinda semi-Victorian era sci-fi, making modern-ish items but using old-fashioned look & technology (ergo the "steam"). A good example would be 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (the Disney version). Or the TV series Wild, Wild, West - where in James West was an 1800s version of 007.

It embodies a certain look, especially for women, of corsets, goggles, lace, & leather:

I haven't seen the movie but it looks like the movie "Hugo" is a big nod to Steampunk.
