I hate cell phones. People seem to expect you carry them around everywhere, and you are supposed to be available 24/7.
They call me on the cell to let me know my landline is busy.
Yeah, because I'm on the phone with someone else!

If they keep calling, I say "I can't talk now, I'm burying a body in the yard."
    That works. Sometimes...

I've been thinking about getting a flare gun.

I also had a prepaid phone and really wouldn't care if anyone called it a "ghetto phone" or whatever they want to call it. My wife signed up for a T-Mobile family plan now that my kids are getting older and it made financial senses to just add an additional line. 99% of calls/texts come from my wife. I don't really like texting unless it is a few words. If you just want basic cell phone service that will just be used for emergencies, etc.; a prepaid phone will work just fine.

They have smartphones with pre-paid now.

I do want one with web and email access though and yes, it's mostly for toy hunting on the weekends.

I'm thinking about buying an unlocked blackberry and switching the sim with a gophone one.

Got myself a smartphone Galaxy S it also does what the i-phone does, the girlfriend works for one of the phone networks,i get half price line rental off the phone,so i am quite lucky in that respect.

I only give my number out to family, work and close friends,it saves on all those unwanted calls and what nots.

I hate cell phones. But my older brother made me get a TracFone (pre-pay), for when I travel, b/c I'm alone. Other than that, it sits here. I don't take it w/ me. And I really don't care when folks go on about smart phones or blackberries or whatever. I've gotten along fine all my life w/o one. It's more hype than anything.

As you can read everyone has an opinion one way or another. My first cell was a tracfone. Before me and the wife signed our contract with verizon it was all i needed and wanted. I still have it as a backup cause i bought so many minutes back in the day the phone expires in 2020. I say start with something less intimidating, if you find yourself wanting more down the road, then upgrade. But pay as you go phones are a good thing for someone like yourself who is just getting started. I will say this. When you do decide to upgrade be careful, those sons of onion sales people will sell you the moon if they can. It is much better to walk in and lay it on the line, tell them this is what i want nothing more, you try and sell me more and i'll wave goodbye. That is why i say start small till you get comfortable with the features.

One other thing is ask if the salesperson gets commission. We signed up for verizon at our local walmart cause the salespeople get pd hourly and i found were not pushy to sell us tons of garbage. They had all the same phones are local verizon store had.

I kind of despise cell phones to. I have two. One is a contract phone and the other is a pay as you go phone. I do not use either of them much at all. The one I carry mainly for an emergency and A listers. The other is basically a call screener. People are always wanting my number when I meet someone it seems. So I give them the screener number until I really get to know them well. I don't like just anyone having my number as I am a more private type of a person.

I really don't like to sit around and text or talk on a phone all day long. I really do not see what so many that do have so much to blab about all the time. You would think that they would run out of stupid crap to talk about after a while.

I cannot even drive down the street without seeing a bunch of people these days driving with either their phone in their ear or texting instead of paying attention to the road like they should. Most of them are all over the road. If they want to put their own life in jeapardy that is one thing. However, they are endangering my welfare as well and homey doesn't play that. I just don't understand what in the H-E double hockey sticks can be that important and can't wait until they see them in person. Unless of course it was a dire emergency or something of that nature. What in the heck did people do before the new phones even existed? To each their own I guess.

So in the end my answer for you or anyone getting a new phone would be start out with a pay as you go phone and test the waters. If you find that you really like the phone and the features and you will really being using it a lot then go for a contract phone if that makes sense for you to do so.

Last time I went down to the city, I talking the Subway and it seems so damn surreal, like a sci-fi movie. I was the ONLY person, out of EVERYONE who wasn't looking down at some cellphone or iPod device. It's scary to think where technology is going to eventually lead us.
