    Cell Phones

I don't have one, yes you read right. I'm in my late 20's and I do not have a cell phone. But recently I've decided it's time I should probably get one. Thing is, I am kind of clueless about them.

I have no credit, so I've been looking at a GoPhone. But I want to know, why are people so down on them? I've read some really nasty comments from people about them. Like that they are for losers, "ghetto phones". Stupid stuff, but what exactly makes somebody so cool for being in a contract?

I don't know much about the pro's and cons.

I think GoPhones have a certain dollar amount they can be allotted to use and/or they have limited functionality and are more like two-way "beepers".

have a go phone and its a regular cell phone, just prepaid, and if you add more money to it before the current payment expires it rolls over. They are not two way beepers, just basic phones instead of pocket pal type computers. I just have no interest in the current latest phone that can do all that internet garbage on it.

I just turned 48 and have not had a cell phone that long in the grand scheme of things. I think I got my first one six years ago and it was a pre-paid phone, like the "Go Phone." I never had any troubles with it, but then the carrier I was using went belly up and I switched over to Verizon on a monthly pay plan, but was still using a simple Motorola Razr. Then the "smart phone" bug bit me (largely thanks to the iPhone), so I traded up and got an HTC Eris Droid phone. It's okay, but for being a "smart" phone, it sometimes acts stupider than tha simpler phones I had earlier. My recommendation: if you're just starting out in the cell phone world, remember the "kiss" rule. If you just want a phone, get just a phone; everything else is just extraneous "stuff" you usually wind up paying out the arse for!!!
sigpic Oh then, what's this? Big flashy lighty thing, that's what brought me here! Big flashy lighty things have got me written all over them. Not actually. But give me time. And a crayon.

I used to have something similar to the GoPhone and there is nothing wrong with them, they are just not as fancy and can't do as much stuff. If you just want a phone to talk and maybe text on, then it will work just fine for you.

You just have to remember to buy new minutes every month or your old minutes wont roll over and you will lose them. That's how it worked with the Iwireless that I had anyway.

My personal cell is from StraightTalk. The folks who call the pre-paid phones "Ghetto Phones" can laugh at my phone all the way to the bank as far as I am concerned. For $45/month and no contracts I get unlimited minutes, text, and data. There is nothing wrong with pre-pay; in fact, I think pre-pay is a very smart move.

I've had the same cellphone since 1997. It's a old Nokia brick.

I signed a two year contract back in the day and every so often they (Verizon-I was with them back when it was PrimCo) will call and try to get me to re-up to upgrade.

I've been blowing them off for years... but my Nokia has finally given up the ghost. Now I'm waiting on the call from the Verizon store to let me know when my iPhone arrives.

I figure it's about time I got a phone made in this century. Oh well.

Cell phones are EVIL! You will never have a moments peace once you get one.

My boss calls me constantly, then there are the wrong numbers, the solicitation calls, and family and friends that think they should call you anytime of the day or night just because they can.

If I could chuck mine in Lake Erie I would, but my job requires me to have one.
If you have a land line and don't need a cell phone, I say stay away...

I have one of those Nokia pay-as-you-go phones because that's really all the communication I need. The great thing about those is if your minutes are not used up after the 60 days allotted to use them, it will get added on when you buy more time. It works well for me and is very inexpensive. I use mine strictly on a "as needed" basis. I don't use them to socialize much. It's really just there in case I'm out and have a question for the wife or need to buzz friends with some cool finds in stores. It's also there for emergencies should one arise. I use it solely for very practical reasons. My wife loves the phones with all the bells and whistles. My opinion, their glorified junk. Her reception is never very good and her internet access is slow. She uses it more for texting and Facebook than anything. That is the true addiction behind these phones. My opinion.
