    Help with my dvr player

So out of the blue my DVR player has a heck of a time reading DVD's. It is hit or miss. Now i realize i need to just upgrade to a blueray player but i can't afford it for about another month. I have 2 questions i hope someone here can help with.
First. It keeps saying it can't read the disc, Does it need a cleaning? and what do i use.? Ok so 3 questions. Do blueray players play regular dvd's?

Well, you can buy a dvd cleaner at WalMart. I am not sure that will help, but it might. Yes, bluray players do play regular DVDs. You definitely want one.

For the DVD's that it can't read, are they newer? Does it happen on all of the DVDs or just a few?

It was a new one that it did it with first then it was every disc i tried after that. The player is 9 years old but well taken care of. It does play finally but i have to keep turning it on and off till the disc is finally running. And it was out of the blue that it started. Maybe i played a disc that had some crud on it. I will hit wally tomorrow.

Yah. sounds like that might be the case. Probably need a cleaning. If you haven't cleaned it since ya bought it, for sure.

When I've had trouble with my blu ray player playing DVD's, I use a lens cleaner and it clears it right up.

All blu ray players play DVD's and CD's.

I would try cleaning it and if it has firmware, just make sure it has the latest version installed.

I would get yourself a cleaning disc from Walmart. Their pretty cheap but very effective. It's always good to give your player a cleaning every few months. If you still have problems, try other discs. There might be a problem with just that one disc. I recently had that happen with a Blu ray disc of mine. It just crapped out. No matter what I did to clean the disc, the player could no longer read it. Sometimes that happens.

Thanks so much guys. I really appreciate the advice. I'm going to walmart here in a little bit.
The dvd that started it was the new fright night so it had just come out. I did try about 6 other ones. None worked the first time. I dropped the ball as far as cleaning it. I am so old school i just finally unhooked my VCR and retired it. Thanks again for the tips.

I give up guys. Walmart had nothing so i had to hit radioshack. They had a lens cleaner for 15 bucks. So i put it in my player and it reads no disc. ***. The instructions say to select track 2 then press play. How the dang flippin $@%^#%$@%@ do i hit play if the stupid thing isn't reading the disc. Then i read on the instructions it is normal for it to say error or no disc but that's how i know it's effective? Am i freakin missing something? It still won't read a dvd when i put it in. I'm about to go all Hulk on it and smash the thing.

I just use a CD cleaner disc in my DVD player.

It says it's made for both

I'd just take the cleaner back to RS and put that money toward a BD player. Also, Blue-ray players upconvert your old DVDs so they'll look even better. We bought a PS3 and now we have a great BD player *and* a gaming console. You can also watch Netflix through it!

Which, IMHO, is what sets the PS3 apart from the XBOX. I have neither, but when I decide to invest in one, it will likely be the PS3 since it'll play Blu's.
sigpic Oh then, what's this? Big flashy lighty thing, that's what brought me here! Big flashy lighty things have got me written all over them. Not actually. But give me time. And a crayon.
