Heads up hoarders - 100W bulbs are going away

So, I guess the law wasn't repealed, and manufacturers in the US won't be able to make traditional 100W incandescent light bulbs after tomorrow. Retailers will be able to sell existing stock, but when it's gone, it's gone.

100-watt light bulbs disappearing, despite Congress' efforts to save them | cleveland.com

The Home Depot near me had 16-packs for $2.97. I won't tell you how many I just bought.

While I'm happy to use CFCs in some places, the wife & I prefer not to read by them. Also, my kids have a habit of knocking over lamps, and I'm not yet sure about the safety of broken CFCs.

It was on the news a few months ago...I really hate the CFCs because the lighting they produce is UGLY and not very warm....and plus no matter what they say, it's still adding mercury to our landfills. You can't just dump the busted ones in the garbage..and I'm sure that many people don't know that the ones that will help you save on electricity is also going to help poison the environment.

Great! Something else for sellers to list on eBay as a RARE vintage item.

Nah, too fra-gee-lay. Sellers would be plagued by people playing switcheroo with old, broken bulbs, and P-Pal would give refunds.

...not that I considered it, or anything.

Yeah, That is true. You made a good point there. I did not think of that right away. Of course with them breaking so easily in shipment that would just make them even more RARE and valuable. LOL!!

Like the environment isn't ruined already. I chuck them in the trash because there is no easy alternative, no at store recycling or anything. At the rate of the one or so I use a year its not that bad. Good thing they last longer than traditionals.

They don't last longer in every situation. My husband flies small vintage planes from the grass airstrip in front of our house. We have lots of friends who swing by in various flying contraptions. We very quickly learned that many types of aircraft will ruin every CFL bulb in the house by causing the electronic components in the ballast to separate In traditional incandescent bulbs, the hot filament will just stretch a bit, but will continue to work.

I will not switch to ugly LED lights, so I already have what I hope is a lifetime supply of 100 watts bulbs. Now I can stock up on the next wattage.

I've got a few that were put in late 2004 and are still going fine.

Say goodbye to lightbulbs and hello to heatbulbs:

It just shows when they ban something (especially a stupid ban), a way around it is found. Now kids can use their easy bake ovens again.
