The term "Jungle Jim" was introduced because some felt "Monkey Bars" was racist. Kind of unnecessary if you ask me, but so is the whole "African American" thing. I have a ton of friends of color, and even they think that term is ridiculous. They're fine with "black", so that's what I use. I also still call them the monkey bars.
I've always called them monkey bars. The first time I saw/heard the term jungle gym was in my 6th grade reading workbook called The Scratch Pages. Whenever the kid in the continuing stories was troubled about something, he'd go to the playground and sit on top of the jungle gym. Funny, the things I remember.
"Do you believe, you believe in magic?
'Cos I believe, I believe that I do,
Yes, I can see I believe that it's magic
If your mission is magic your love will shine true."
We had a fantastic set of monkey bars at my elementary school. It was about 4 kids high and shaped like a geodesic dome. There were bars running through the interior of it and if you lost it climbing up you went down like a pachinko ball. Awesome.
First time i ever had the wind knocked out of me was on the Monkey bars. I was hanging by my arms and feet when i fell directly on my back causing all air to leave me. I was never as reckless as i was that one time ever again.
