    Elly Mae Clampett vs. Barbie

Settlement reached in Elly Mae Clampett Barbie doll suit

    Dec. 29, 2011, 9:47 AM EST

NEW ORLEANS (AP) -- The actress who played Elly May Clampett on the "The Beverly Hillbillies," toymaker Mattel Inc. and CBS Consumer Products Inc. have settled a lawsuit that claimed the companies didn't get the actress' approval to use her name and likeness for a Barbie doll.

Bing: More on Donna Douglas lawsuit

Donna Douglas played the critter-loving tomboy for nine seasons of the CBS television comedy about a backwoods family who strike oil and moves to Beverly Hills.

A one-sentence order Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Baton Rouge, La., said only that a settlement had been reached. Details of court settlements typically are kept private. However, Douglas' lawsuit sought compensation of at least $75,000.

In earlier filings, CBS and Mattel said they didn't need her approval because the network held exclusive rights to the character.

That would be my guess. The doll isn't even based on Donna Douglas' likeness and uses a replica vintage Barbie head. The Bewitched and I Dream of Jeannie Barbies are the same. They are Barbie as the characters and not based on the actresses that played them.
You are a bold and courageous person, afraid of nothing. High on a hill top near your home, there stands a dilapidated old mansion. Some say the place is haunted, but you don't believe in such myths. One dark and stormy night, a light appears in the topmost window in the tower of the old house. You decide to investigate... and you never return...

The good news is the money will go to her pet and animal projects.

True, but a photo of Douglas and a text mention of her name are included on the packaging.
