    Any banjo players here?

I've been learning to play guitar since college, but in the past few years, I decided I really wanted to learn the banjo as well. My husband decided to suprise me for Christmas this year. He tricked me into thinking he got me a gig bag for my guitar, but when I pulled the case from behind the tree, it was the wrong shape and size. Plus, it was heavy. Yet I was still shocked when I opened it and saw what was inside. Here it is next to my guitar:

Plus, I've become really reliant on chords and tabs to play songs on the guitar. For the 5-string banjo, you really need to learn some fingerpicking, so I think it will improve my guitar playing as well. Even just strumming the beginner chords, the sound is so amazing.

Very cool. I'm mostly a fiddle or upright player, but I dabble with fretted instruments on occasion. Are you interested in old timey clawhammer stuff or more like the Flatt/Scruggs up-picking sort of thing?

No matter what, it is a fun instrument with a long and colorful history. Enjoy!!

I don't know. I'm a big fan of Ralph Stanley, who doesn't really play anymore, but is known for the clawhammer style. I'd be a fool not to at least learn a song or two. I guess it all depends on what I try and like best. I definitely want to stick with bluegrass and heritage-type songs though. That's the whole reason I wanted to play. But I'm also looking for tabs or an arrangement of "The Rainbow Connection" too.

I have never tried playing the banjo, but as instruments go I love it.

Very cool. My Dad taught himself Banjo when he was in high school and has been playing ever since.

Both my sons play the guitar (my youngest also plays the electric guitar). My daughter plays the violin and all three play piano. My youngest has mentioned the banjo but hasn't pushed it yet.

Every time I hear the word Banjo I immediately think of Roy Clark & Steve Martin.

My father-in-law, who was an avid banjo player, passed away almost a year ago. At his funeral, we displayed his banjo next to the casket. After the service, I quietly tucked the banjo into the back of our car, because my mother-in-law is a hoarder and it didn't want it to get lost or damaged in her house. It now sits in our bedroom, where my MIL will never see it. My husband played violin and mandolin in his younger days and I am trying to encourage him to try his dad's banjo.
