Big Trouble in Little China appreciation thread

This thread will probably be four posts long, but I love this movie.

It's so campy and non-sensical, but that's the charm. Carpenter really took some chances with this mixing traditional Chinese martial arts films with 80's superficialism and made a darn funny movie. I just re-watched this tonight on Netflix streaming and realized how this movie really hasn't lost anything since it's release some 20 plus years ago. Jack Burton, for my money, is one of the top movie heroes. This was definitely Kurt Russel's best role. Too bad a follow-up was never made.

Jack "WHat's that, a magic potion?"

Egg "Yes."

Jack "Good. Thought so. Do we drink it?"

Egg "Yes."

Jack "Thought so. Good."

and loved every moment.

I consider it a spiritual cousin to Buckaroo Banzai.

I love this movie SO much. I've probably seen in a couple of dozen times, including seeing it last year in a rep theatre.

It does have one pet peeve for me - at the beginning of the story Egg is telling the story of the movie - but the movie never returns to that concept. It doesn't make sense. I know - you're thinking "THAT'S what doesn't make sense to you in this movie?!", but for some reason it really bugs me when movies don't bookend story-within-story narratives.

Apparently, the opening scene was thought up by the studio who wanted to make sure Jack Burton was given a bit of a build up to make audiences think of him as more "heroic".

My friends and I all really liked it back in the day. It definitely has an honored place in the lexicon of 80s movies..

Certainly one of my all time greats, the one liners are just classic. Kurts character just looks lost in the whole film, as he trys to be a hero

One of my favorite things to watch on a dark and stormy night.
Some of the lines never fail to crack me up, like when one of the Chinese gangsters pulls out a knife Jack Burton asks 'where'd you get that!?'

Big Trouble, Escape from New York, The Thing...Carpenter and Russel made a string of all time classics that are among my most beloved films.

Love this film!!
I was lucky enough to see it at the theatre way back in the day.
Just picked up a copy for $5.
Really wish they would have made a sequel to that one.
