Mego Star Trek, and trading card collector

    Hello everyone!

I am a mostly a nonsports card collector nowadays, but I also have a nice collection of Mego Star Trek figures and toys. I never did get the really tough classic aliens, although I remember seeing them at Sears ONCE, and not having any money - when I went back a few days later, they were gone. No Romulan for me. Same thing happened with the Planetarium at PlayWorld, unfortunately.

I remember loving the Superhero series, but having to choose which to buy with the money I had, and Star Trek always seemed to win out. Never did get my Batman, Robin, and Batgirl, still regret that.

I did manage to get the Greatest American Hero Bug with Ralph and Bill, that is a nice piece! Would have loved the regular 8 inch figure of Ralph, in particular.

I also bought all the recent Action Figure magazine issues that had the Mego retrospective installments, very interesting reading.

Anyway, the dovetail of Mego to trading cards is cool to me on two levels, and I love the idea that these are truly intended for trading, not profiteering. A recent article in Non-Sport Update led me to this site. I'd love to get started, but I understand newbies are suspect. All I can say is that I have been trading Wacky Packages on a different site for maybe 2 years now, and it's fun, brings me back to the days when I was a kid and traded cards just to complete my sets. Wackys got me into other card collecting, and that just took off. I will try to make some posts here so you will know I'm for real, and I will try to become more familiar with how this site works.

Hopefully I'll luck into a starter card set!

Thanks for the welcome! From your tag, I may have some stuff you'd be interested in talking about. Funny you listed cereal, have you ever seen Freakie Magnets? I only have one issue, but it's great! I actually have a separate collection of Wacky Packages that are cereal related, just missing 2. When the Simpsons movie came out earlier this year, I picked up a box of KrustyO's.

Other toys besides Star Trek - MASH figures, including both Klingers, one or two TRON, lots of BG, and SW. A bunch of 70's Buck Rogers too. Best plastic tote I have is an original Transformers still in the cardboard sleeve.

Hey, the last Wacky Packages set had a Raid parody, I'd gladly send you one if you're interested.

Wow, a Romulan, lucky you! From the moment I saw it I thought that one was awesome, my timing just stunk, no money. I did get all 6 first series Star Trek figures, and remember when there were about a dozen Uhura's at Modells, and not much else. I had trouble finding McCoy at first, all they had was one with an obviously broken leg, so I finally bought that and a Spock, and switched heads, I was SO proud of myself...

I got a couple of the second series aliens like the Cheron and Neptunian from dealers at conventions. Never did get any of the third series aliens, too expensive.

I remember seeing the Phaser Battle Game advertised in a Sunday sale paper, wish I had kept that, just for the nostalgia. But hey, I was a kid, and really just wanted the toy! I waved that in front of my mom for a while.

i always wanted to do wacky packages but couldnt bring myself to collect one more thing. Will have to check on Raid cards. Funny about Freakies cereal. I tracked down the creator . her name is Jackie End. She was shocked someone wanted her autograph . I think she sells her auto pn the freakies site now.

Welcome to the boards. I am a Star Trek fan and collector from way back and I too, saw the Aliens (first series) in what I think was Two Guys. Didn't have any money to get them though and I didn't see them again until the 80's at Star Trek conventions and they were pretty expensive collectibles, even then so I never got them.

Still don't have the Aliens but I will get them someday.

Welcome aboard. You had to miss the Romulan as a kid, but you now have a chance to make up for that. EMCE is reissuing the Trek figures (you do know that, don't you?) and Romulan is soon to be released

Welcome, I just beamed aboard myself.

Trying to find kirk and Spock which have been packed up for the last 5 years. Got the ST cards and will be looking for more of the cards to trade.

Always keeping my eyes open for Meos at antique shops and garage sales. Never know what you may find.
Too many toys. Not enough space!

Thanks for the welcome, and the heads up. I do know about the reissues, and my local comic shop is now on notice to save one of each for me. I did miss the first reissue series pair but such is life. After that came in and sold out, the shop owner mentioned it to me.

I'm glad to see that the reissues are accepted here! Sometimes collectors don't approve. But, these are distinctly packaged, seems to me anyone wanting to buy an original of something like this should certainly have done enough 'homework' to easily tell the difference.

Anyway, I think these figures are great, looking forward to finally getting my Romulan!!

Welcome! You sound very enthusiastic about the hobby, I'm sure you'll enjoy it here. There are several members who can hook you up with the EMCE reissues here. Repros are accepted here. It is an openly discussed topic, with some on both sides of the argument, but we keep it civil! We even have an accessory check section to help identify repro and original parts. Enjoy!!!
