    Your Christmas Tree

Almost every year, my family gets a tree permit from the Forest Service and makes a fun morning of driving into the mountains and picking and cutting the perfect tree - usually a white fir. This year, we've been so busy with the kids' activities, that we had to forego the tree cutting tradition and buy a tree from a tree lot. The tree is nice, but it definitely wasn't as fun for us.

If you put up a Christmas tree in your house, what kind of tree do you use (real, artificial, etc.)? Do you cut your own?

I never heard of getting a permit from the forest service to cut down a tree on state land.

Who would you even ask ? ... the local ranger ?

Always a real tree from a tree lot, purchased Dec. 23, decorated on Christmas Eve. And carried 6 blocks! This year will be a challenge b/c of my back, but my niece (age 31) will be here to help me.

We used to do real tree...go to a local tree farm, cut it down, etc. We keep our tree up longer than most people so decided to buy a high quality artificial tree.

We have a fake tree I picked up on clearance at Target. 90% off with my wife's 10% employee discount paid about $25 for it. Pre lit and it is in a rotating base. I miss the smell of a dead tree but not the hassle!

We buy our tree every year from the lot across the street from my house. Take the whole family over and pick one out. I always vote for a small "Charlie Brown" tree, but get out voted 4 to 1. LOL

Our fake tree from '09, the last time we put it up before we moved into an apartment. Now we do not have the room for it. I miss it.

I prefer a real tree, but with the risk of fire and the yearly mess of needles, we opted for a nice artificial, pre-lit tree a few years ago. It's pretty nice. Just missing the pine smell. I wanted to put it up in mid-November, but we just put it up about 4 days ago.

Our artificial trees go up the weekend after Thanksgiving and come down between Christmas and New Years.

                          I have a 10-foot, pre-lit in the living room.

Then I also have a 4-footer up in the dormer window above the front door.

I have a smaller tree yet in my library.

But the pièce de résistance is my 1960's aluminum tree. It goes behind closed doors in our bedroom because it seems to emit a silent signal that screams "Cats, come eat and destroy me". While it is hidden from inside the house, it shines out from the bedroom window towards the driveway greeting arriving guests like a hideous beacon of tackiness.

Charlie Brown style. Doesn't require a lot to acquire it, movie it, get it in the door, decorate it, or dispose of it. Also, our meager presents look huge under a 3ft tall tree...
