I don't want to dis Conan but I was really pizzed at my brother and his friend over something they said about Conan. He and his friend said if Conan had the top rate special effects that Lord of the Rings had, it would be better than LOTR. To me that is totally B.S. I'm not a fantasy fan so I think my observations are less biased on this but SPFX would not make it a better film and certainly not better then LOTR. It needs a better lead actor and a more adventure packed storyline. Conan should be more like the 1st Terminator but turned out more like the Popeye film, slow, plodding, no action for too-long, periods of time.

The whole movie in a theater thing has changed. I remember when Star Wars came out it was in the local theater for over 20 weeks. I didn't see it the first time it was here but it was released 3 other times over the next few years ( I saw it each time then ). That just doesn't happen anymore. A movie gets about 1 month around here now if it's lucky.

        Yul Brynner: WESTWORLD

One of the great movies that was ahead of its time!

That being said, that would be a top ten if they ever created a mego of that

          Just thought of another one

          The Mad Max movies

These were HUGE back in the day

Today, I bet most kids would say "mad who?"

I always liked "The Running Man" with Arnold but also enjoyed Stephen King's book version prior to the movie.

Bill Murray film that wasn't 'Ghostbusters'?

                  Easy...'Meatballs'.

I must have seen that at least four or five times when I was thirteen. It came out the summer I went to California to stay with my sister for a few weeks.

                  I loved it.

Of course, I bet a lot of people have forgotten about it.

I honestly don't think things are much different with this generation of kids.

Here's some of the biggest grossing action/adventure movies of the 50s - I don't remember knowing about these when I was a kid in the 70s:

                    • Kim
                    • Ivanhoe
                    • Bend of the River
                    • Mogambo
                    • Vera Cruz
                    • Demetrius and the Gladiators
                    • Battle Cry
                    • The Sea Chase
                    • To Hell and Back
                    • The Bridges at Toko-Ri
                    • The Tall Men
                    • The Vikings
                    • The Buccaneer

And there was probably less than one third of the movies being made at that time compared to now. Plus, kids into movies now have an extra 30+ years of movies to catch up on than we did.

I've never heard of Network. Or Coma.

                      The classics for me are:
                      Back To The Future
                      Ghostbusters
                      Indiana Jones
                      ET
                      Jaws

                      Stuff like that.

The Harry Potter films are among the biggest if not the biggest modern movies. I've been rereading the books. When I finish a book, I get to watch the movie to go with it. It gives me a chance to compare them while they are fresh in my mind.

I'm surprised you never even heard of Coma

Yeah, I only knew "Coma" from the VHS cover with the image of the body hanging - then later it only stood out as a movie-trivia thing because Michael Crichton directed it. I still haven't seen it.

It sounds like something that needs my attention so I'll be making a point to find it online.

Watch "Network" for sure! It's brilliant - and it's one of the only movies I can think of that seems more modern as time moves forward.

" I'm as Mad as Hell and I'm Not gonna take it anymore!!!!"
I know people who quote movies like this but dont know what it means.
                                "Soylent green is people!!!"
The difficult thing on this subject is the "BIG" Movie classification... See back in the day, movies that had some noteriety to them were the BIG movie you had to see. Like Death Race 2000. That was the big deal movie. Later the big deal movies were classics that were overlooked. Cabinette of Dr. Caligari. Battleship Potemkin. Ectasy (Hedy Lemoure) and Metropolis. Thank God my friend informed me that I could borrow these from the local Library on VHS. Metropolis was AWESOME!!! It took me decades to finally see an almost complete version. I think its lessons could stand today between the widening class structure of business and labor.
As for the much hyped then quickly forgotten type of BIG movies. I see them alot on oddball and local digital cable networks. Anyone remember Aeon Flux??? My local ABC affiliate has a second digital channel that plays all movies. The cool thing is they showed "The French Connection" Another AWESOME flick I dont see too often. Anyway, I hoppe to end my reply with more odd movie quotes.
"I think were gonna need a bigger boat."
"I got a bad feeling about this."
"Cats and dogs Living together. Mass hysteria!!!"
                                "There is NO sanctuary."
"I'm getting too old for this $#!7."
"Would you like to play a game?"
"Where we're going. We wont need roads."
                                "Be excellant to each other!"
                                "Candygram for Mongo."
"Open the pod bay doors Hal."
                                "And dont call me Shirley."
"My God!!! Its full of stars."
                                "THere HEEEEERRREEE."
"Back and to the Left, Back and to the left, Back and to the left."
                                "Let her go you B!7C#"
                                "I'll be back."
                                "Warriors come out to plaaaayyyy."
