Are the Hunger Games books Ok for a 10 year old?

I'm looking for gift ideas for my 10-year-old niece who loves to read. If anyone has read the Hunger Games books, please offer up your opinion on the series and its age appropriateness for a 10-year-old.

And if there are any other contemporary books you know of please mention them as well.

But my Son loves all the Diary of a Wimpy Kid books ..., The Lightning Jackson Books ..., and the Yogamie Yoda & DarthVader Books.
