    It would suck if they miscalculated and eventually steered the asteroid into earth's path.

      If it were going slower it would hit us because the earth's gravity would have less force to have to pull against , but at the speed it was going it was pulled towards us slightly but to much force was produced against our pull

          No dude - those guys made a huge 'splosion! They 'splosioned it in half and both pieces narrowly missed the Earth.

          Can you imagine if the climax of the movie was like "We moved the asteroid 20.3 meters and now our calculations show it's just going to miss us!!"? Pretty lousy ending for a movie.

            This is a theory for asteroids that we KNOW for sure are going to hit Earth - so either way...

            Again - all theoretical, but from what I understand it's likely that we have the technology right now to potentially save a lot of people's lives. It's really just about money.
