The Taking Of Pelham 123 (1974) blu ray

I've always enjoyed this movie (especially the end shot) and it just recently came out on blu ray. Only extra is a trailer but considering what was available before (a DVD with a non 16:9 enhanced letterbox transfer) it's as good as gold.

The movie has the great Walter Matthew, the great Robert Shaw (with a very un-Quint English accent), the great Hector Ellisandro (I know I must of mispelled that), the great Martin Balsim and more. Plus it has a great and gritty score.

If you have Netflix streaming and want to sample it, you can. Have not seen the remake, heard it was not good.

I still have my original VHS release of this, it's a great film but i never liked the scenes with the mayor, they never rang true and for me spoilt the film.

The mayor scenes was a liability but the actor reminded me of Mayor Koch.

I allways got the feeling that the film makers were trying to make some sort of statement about the type of person who gets to be mayor but i may be completly wrong on that.

I've always dug that film, too.
It also has Jerry Stiller in it.... like Frank Costanza before retirement

Am I mistaken in thinking that there were TWO remakes in recent years?

Personally, I liked the Mayor scenes - I thought they were funny - that actor TOTALLY reminded me of Ed Koch (turns out the same actor played the Mayor in "Batman" too) - and thought it added to the subplot.

Maybe it's just the way I see it, but I see the subplot of the film as a commentary on "the system". Mr. Blue (Shaw) is disgruntled with the efficiency of modern life which he felt held him back - so he attempts to calculate a way to exploit the system for it's weaknesses. Matthau is a systematic and calculating guy having the same problems as Shaw (not getting the support or success he deserves) but from the other side, he remains loyal to the law.

The Mayor I see as one more angle - calculating from within the system - but also controlling it for personal gain. The fact that he's sick in bed is interesting to me - are the filmmakers trying to say that for all his power he's still just a slob in the system - or maybe they're connecting him to Mr. Green (who keeps sneezing). Maybe they're saying Mr. Green and the Mayor mirror each other the way Matthau and Shaw's characters mirror each other. I don't really know - but it's interesting to me.

My guess is the mayor played a bigger role in the book, but I haven't read it.

It foresaw Ed Koch as Mayor prior to his becoming so.

At any rate, it's a really good movie all the way around. And, I agree, the final scene is great!

Rampart, this is Squad 51. How do you read?

Nope, no mistake, a TV version 1998 w/ Edward James Olmos & Vincent D'Onofrio and a 2009 theatrical movie w/ Denzel Washington & John Travolta.
