    NFL mid-season thoughts/opinions

It's been an interesting season so far, with some surprises. These are only opinions and observations. No need for flame wars here.

Cam Newton - Eating my words here. I never thought he'd amount to much and he'd be out of the league in a few years. Once his football IQ catches up with his ability and instincts he'll be unstoppable.

San Fran Niners - Never saw this coming. I always liked Harbaugh as a player, and it's refreshing to see a coach so passionate about his craft. Many say they haven't played anyone yet. Still, 6-1 is the second best record in the league. Smith isn't the true answer at QB, but he's functional.

Tony Romo - My opinion has never swayed. He will not get any better than he is now, it's just not going to happen. He is no better today than four years ago, maybe worse. He's not terrible by any stretch, he's just not a franchise player.

Ochocinco - Nine catches. As mentioned before, he has less balls coming his direction than Susan Boyle. Retirement is required.

Peyton Manning - I know this isn't a popular opinion, but he needs to retire. Neck injuries are nothing to mess around with. He is certainly one of the best I've ever seen, top five for me, but his day has come. I do not want to see a Chris Reeve situation for him. His pride will not allow him to give it up, but he should.

Tebow - Lot's of controversy and opinions follow this dude, even outside of football. He's a self-proclaimed virgin, and true to form, last week he couldn't score when it counted. He wrote a memoir last year. For what? He wasn't playing football or having sex. That could have been MY book. He just doesn't have it yet and may never. He's an incredible athlete and human being, he just isn't likely to make it as a QB. I hope he proves critics wrong, especially Merril Hodge. He's a jackass. He had more career fumbles than td's so he shouldn't have much to say.

The Ryan bros. - STFU. Seriously, close your fatass lips and cease speaking. Your father was a immoral, insufferable jackass, and you have inherited most of his traits. THey remind me of the movie Billy Madison. "O'Doyle rules!" They went over a cliff. We should be so lucky.

Super Bowl - Packers and Steelers. Book it.

Suck for Luck - There are no teams tanking it to get the first pick. These guys are playing for their livelihood. They couldn't care less about some 20 year old kid they might get. Indy won't draft him unless they plan on trading. If he's as good as advertised, he needs to start immediately, not sit behind an established veteran. Newton, Dalton and Ponder have proven that philosophy is no longer correct.

Suh - He may be the most physically dominate player I've ever seen. He's like Reggie White with a lack of sportsmanship. Interesting stat: He's tied with 23 other players for 41st in the league for sacks. He may be the only player ever to be quadruple teamed.

Couldn't agree with you more about Peyton Manning and Romo. Manning is done and Romo has always been more about the hype than his actual performance on the field. Yeah, he's played some good games and like you said, isn't terrible, but he never has been, nor will ever be a great quarterback.

No mention of the Giants??? Interesting...

^^^My bad. I forgot about the G-men. I was a huge Giants fan during the Parcells era, but not much since. Coughlin just annoys me. Eli has quietly become a terrific QB. I never thought much of him before. For my money, my favorite Giants were Rodney Hampton and Mark Bavaro. LT is legendary, but scum.

I prefer to wait until their 3rd season in the league before making any assessments on rookie QBs. I've seen it too many times before where a rookie comes out and does real well (at least for a rookie) but in the second or third year they don't progress like they should and in some cases regress. By that time there is enough film of them to give a defense what they need to see to game plan against them. Newton has surprised me too but I'll still take the wait and see approach as with the other rookies.

I think the Colts would take Luck with the first pick. Why shouldn't they? The new CBA has eliminated the obscene money a high pick gets before they ever see the field and even if Manning comes back there is nothing wrong with having a possible franchise QB waiting on the bench. It sure worked for the Packers.

The teams that have surprised me the most are the 49rs, Bills, and Bengals. They are all playing better then I expected them to. The Lions are no shock as they have been putting together a good team for a few years now and it's about time they started winning some games.

Romo is a pretty good QB stat wise. His career passer rating is still just under 95 but he has not had a good year this season. I don't see enough Cowboy games to give an opinion on what is going wrong with them.

Tebow? He is just as bad as I expected he would be. From what I've read he sounds like a very nice young man but that doesn't help him throw the ball and as long as they are not acting foolish off the field I don't pay a lot of attention to players personal lives. His mechanics are some of the worst I have seen and as a Bears fan I have seen plenty of bad QBs! I just don't see him ever making it as an NFL quality starting QB. You have to be able to pass effectively or defenses will just stack the box and dare you to beat them through the air. The ex Bronco's HC, whom I referred to as McDope, really hurt that team badly. I feel for Bronco fans as that team is a mess right now.

Ochocinco had some great seasons playing for the Bengals but he is older and at age 33 I think he just isn't the same player he once was. But part of it could be that with new England he is no longer the featured WR.

Any idea of why he has played so badly this year? I don't get to see him play that often. Stat wise he has really fallen down so far this season.

Too bad about Manning, but I feel lucky to have watched him play. Kind of how I felt when Barry Sanders was aging.

Cam Newton - wow. He's an accurate passer with a lot of other tools, but the important thing is the accurate part. Can't teach that.

My Redskins should at least be tied with the Giants atop the NFCE. They can't beat a high school team it seems.

Well my Ravens as we all know have a crappy offense and good defense. Flacco needs much improvement has good days and bad days and of course being the 1 game I get to see in person was a VERY bad game.
Our team itself can beat good teams but lose to bunk teams. Weve had some good games though. Next week we play the steelers and Im hoping we don't suck.
In my opinion nothing matters until the playoffs. 49ers and Lions have impressed me this year as well.

i agree man, especially about them annoying *** fat brothers

Newton's a beast but then again, he was drafted #1 for a reason

Rivers has been a huge let down and so has CJ2K , dude can't even get yards against the crappy teams

Suh is great but dirty as hell

Megatron has become the best WR in the game while Jimmy Graham has quietly become the best TE in the game

the Packers will win it all, Rodgers is a beast

Weird on the SF one... Who has been saying they haven't played anyone yet? They have had one of the toughest schedules of any team this season based on opponents' win/loss percentage (which is super weird, I know, bcuase the teams they played weren't supposed to be any good either, for the most part).

I might regret thinking this, but I'm not convinced that Smith is a washout yet. Harbaugh swore by him when he had loads of other options, and on his watch the guy is one of the most efficient QB's in the league. His accuracy isn't where it needs to be yet, but he has proven he's got an arm (one of the knocks on him in the past) and his incompletions would have been picks a year or two ago... Harbaugh hasn't been wrong about anything yet, so I have to assume he sees something in Alex that is still developing.

I'm a Packers fan, but I'm not so sure they'll keep up the undefeated streak this Sunday versus the Chargers. Green Bay's winning percentage against the Chargers is their best, but the Chargers might bring it. They're playing at home and they want to end the Pack's streak. My money's on the Packers but I don't think the Chargers will just let themselves be steamrolled.

                            Mine was, will and and always will be #11 Phil Simms-- I still rock the old school Simms jersey at every Giants game I go to, home or away;
