Carrie Fisher's 'Wishful Drinking' ...so sad.

It's late... I'm up... stopped on HBO and found this presentation. Wow. This dame is really jacked up. Princess Leia no more for sure. My question that I would have to ask is, "Why on all of the Earth would you ever bash yourself, your family and everything else you've ever done in your career to the point that the picture you paint is one that is so depressing, depraved and dysfunctional that whatever positive legacy you could have left for the folks who wanted to be your fans is completely flushed down the toilet?"

    I just don't get it.

Because she's being real and it's her own therapy to get through her own life. Hollywood is a farce an Illusion that millions dream of being part of and never seeing the real side the reality.....

do you realize all the crap she put up just to be princess Leia, trying to lose weight constantly being told she was too fat and being in the shadow of her two parents.....

      Well said, KW.

I loved Wishful Drinking. It was funny and smart. And I disagree--it's a very positive legacy. She's a survivor and survived with her sense of humor intact and brings a lot of great insight to the rest of us.

Never saw the show but I read the book, adored it. I actually bought it for the wife but ended up reading the whole thing before giving it to her. I gained a lot of respect for her to be honest.

          kingdom warrior nailed it.

I have a lot more affection and respect for Carrie Fisher for her autobiographical work and her edgy sense of humor.

She's got a whole other career as a novelist and screenwriter - she's great in Star Wars and all, but it's not who she is.

I saw it on a plane,
            and enjoyed it greatly.

It's difficult to open wounds and extract humor -
            and she does it wonderfully.

I haven't seen the HBO special or read the book but I'm sure it is similar in some respects to Maureen McCormick (AKA Marcia Brady) "Here's The Story".....she talks a lot about cocaine addiction, alcoholism, abuse, etc. She insinuates some drug use with Barry Williams but presume he was ok with what little she said of it because he admitted to using quite a bit of drugs himself and even being stoned in a few episodes of "The Brady Bunch" I really enjoyed reading it and am sure it must have been therapeutic for her.

So this is HBO show now? I saw it in person, the one woman revue. It was brilliant and she sooooo nice in person. Wish I was the lucky stiff that got picked to wear the Leia wig on stage and be incorporated into the show.
The down side was this reviewer who had a sour look on his face the entire time. Old crotchety man she picked on a couple of times since he was in the front row. He got up, yelled at her and walked out. He was booed pretty much by everyone. But she went on like a trooper. Great show and loved all the inside perspective of the real Hollywood.

Here's the thing--celebrity tell all books and dredging up public drama is not new and is frequently kind of gross and awful.

She's hilarious and intelligent. Plus, she comes from one of the most famous Hollywood divorces ever, was an icon in the most popular film ever made. Endlessly fascinating and wonderfully presented.

He started yelling at her onstage? That's amazingly insane!

I don't really lump her in with other children of celebrities who make a small career with tell-alls. I think she's established herself as a legit writer. Then again, I guess it's a fine-line because all good writers exploit their upbringing and experience.

Judging by you guys' responses it's official, I've grown into a prude.

Didn't see that one comin'. Yep I must take a vaction out of this little town I call home now. I think the "Mayberry RFD" thing is blinding my scope.

Never saw the show.., but LOVED the book, especially her views of the Princess Leia shampoo bottles, lifesize figures of her (anatomically correct..) and her comments on her marriage to Paul Simon. Very smart, funny, and revealing.

I caught a small sliver of it this afternoon. Loved the bit where she said she's got to pay George Lucas a couple of bucks every time she looks in the mirror.
