    Remember those baby turtles ?

    Just had a flashback.

We used to have tiny miniature turtles (like in Rocky) but my mom got rid of them when she heard they were dangerous because they carried diseases.

Anybody used to have them before they stopped selling them ?

They were a fad in the mid 70's

the turtles will only get salmonella if exposed to it by feeding them raw meat. A straight diet of pellet turtle food will keep them clean of it. They are mostly back is pet stores sold for "educational purposes".

Poor baby turtles. :( We were in our favorite Chinese market recently and saw a largge plastic tub stuffed with soft shelled turtles. There were 50 or so in a small bin, crowded in stinking brown water. :(

We bought them at Woolworth's for like $.49 or so. My great grandmother made us get rid of them because they carried diseases and kids could die in their sleep from breathing turtle air or some such story.

And by get rid of I mean they were gone next morning, and no questions were asked. And strangely, I was not upset over this. I think the turtle air had been working on my brain for a night or two, and perhaps I was partially lobotomized by it. Not really sure if I got better.

I remember my mom buying me a baby turtle at a department store when I was a kid. We got the whole set, plastic container with island with fake palm tree and all. Of course, he died after a few months. I asked my mother if we could get another but she told me that stores didn't sell them any more because of that whole salmonella scare. The risk was probably extremely minimal, you'd be good as long as you watched what you fed the turtle and washed your hands after handling. But all it took was probably a couple rather dim-witted kids sticking their turtles in their mouths and later catching salmonella which ruined it for everybody.

Those guys are selling them for food, probably is supposed to help errectile dysfunction or some nonsense. The Chinese have hunted the native softshells to extinction and are now working on running the US ones off the planet.
