It's when you completely wipe everything out and start fron scratch. It kinda resets the device to how it was when you first got it. (Kinda....) If you click on the item, you should have a "reformat" or "reset" (or something similar) command on the menu. It'll reset everything. (AND ask you a zillion times if that's what you REALLY want to do....)

Thanks Don. I don't think I'll be doing that. It does still work in my laptop, so I'll just go get a new card today. I have to buy new ones anyway for the cruise.

If the card needs reformatting (wiping clean) then I don't recommend you use it in your laptop either - you could loose any data you put on it. Reformatting will probably fix it, and it's a lot easier to do than it might sound right now.

Just make sure all your pics/data are backed up. Remember, you can put things back onto the card after it's reformatted - so it will probably be like it never happened.

It might be easier to just buy a new "SD" card like you said. Depending on the age of your camera; it might now have much memory. The prices have dropped dramatically so might not be worth the headache if you can spare $10 or so for a new card.

Being a Luddite I keep EVERYTHING on external disk, and when the computer starts acting funny it gets a complete wipe. That way any kind of critical fail isn't a serious problem.

Never mind, folks. I'm going to get a new memory card tomorrow, and pray I don't need a new camera.
I understand that you didn't know what reformatting was. But I ask if you at least knew how to find the memory card file on the computer when the card was plugged into it. If you knew that, I was going to explain how to reformat the card since it only took a few clicks of the mouse pad to do it.

Thanks guys. I'm just gonna back up the few pics I haven't saved and get another card. They're really not that expensive. I think I paid $6 for this one.

Thanks for putting up w/ a cranky HardyGirl!

Not to throw more flame on the fire, but with memory cards, there is a bit of "you get what you pay for". Discount brands do not always have the reliability of others (SanDisk is a decent brand, some of the no name brands, not so much).

On top of that, there are different classes of cards, related mostly to transfer speed. The lower the class, the slower. Class 2 is slow. Class 4 is faster, and ok for some point and shoot cameras, Class 6 is better, and so on. Anything above a Class 6 is probably overkill for your use, and more expensive than you need. Just consider spending a couple bucks more for something that might be more reliable.

                      This was a Kodak brand.

SanDisk invented flash drive memory...their products are good. Even though yours might be Kodak; they might be using a 3rd party manufacturer to make them.

Well, it's the camera, folks. I just bought a new SansDisk card and put it in and it still says the card is unusable! I really didn't wanna have to buy a new camera. I got this one for Christmas last year, that's not even a year ago!!! Looks like it's Amazon w/ one day shipping.

What's the memory size of the old card that use to work and the new one?

One of my older cameras won't seem to work with cards over 1gb, for example. I bought a new card for it, and thought it was broken, but with older smaller cards it still works fine.

Both cards (the old one that's been there for almost a year and the new one I just bought), are 2 GBs. I was on chat w/ a guy from the Kodak site. It can be repaired, but I can't wait that long, I'm leaving next Friday. I just bought a new camera from Amazon. Same make and model.
