I agree, both planning and some luck helped keep him from assassination. Some of it was by design. Hitler basically had the different divisions (SS, Gestapo, SA, Luftwaffe, etc) fighting amongst themselves as they never trusted each other. Of course IMO I also believe that is part of what caused their ultimate failure.
Another irony is that Hitler never let Germany or the rest of the world know the true stories of his life in Vienna. Not only did he sell his paintings almost exclusively to Jewish dealers and dine as a guest in various Jewish homes but he also had a crush on a Jewish girl. His life seemed to be a story of personal contradictions. Had his father Alois kept his birth name (he was born out of wedlock with no father listed) we would be talking about Adolf Schicklgruber. Alois took the last name of his step father which was Hiedler and later it was changed to Hitler.
