    The Truth About Santa

Some of you might still believe in him and that's highly admirable. But this question is for the rest of us who believed in him as children. At what point did you stop believing and realize there was no Santa?

For me it was when I was in first grade. My older brother and I had come home from school and were locked out of the house (in those days there wasn't much fear of leaving kids alone coming home from school.) The only way we could get into the house was to go through the "scary" basement. We avoided the basement at all costs because it was a dark place full of unimaginable monsters. But unfortunately it was really cold outside and we had little choice.

So we went through the outside basement door and went inside and found bags full of toys and presents. We didn't understand why all those toys were sitting there as if they were an offering to the monsters who lived there. My older brother was the first to come to the conclusion that our parents were actually the ones buying the toys. I tried to be more diplomatic "just in case" by stating to him "well maybe Santa had to deliver them early because he had to go to so many houses". He nodded his head in agreement and we decided never to speak of this to our parents. We were afraid that if we said anything to them they would take all our presents back. And that's how I learned the truth about Santa!

I don't remember when I found out my parents were Santa, I am sure it was because of my older brother. I am sure I probably spoiled it for my little sister.

*** On a side note on things remembered as a small child, I do remember asking my mother who broke off my little sister's "tee tee" the first time I watched my mother change her diaper!!!

I was one of the hold outs. I believed in Santa til I was 10, despite every kid in school trying to convince me there wasn't. As a black woman, I've noticed that "ghetto children" really don't get to believe in Santa, b/c of the harsh reality that many of the families can't afford much. Since I grew up on the outskirts of Harlem, this was often the case, and all the kids tried to tell me there was no Santa. I wasn't the type to believe a kid over my own parents, who firmly believed I should have the magic of childhood. I think I just let go of that (along w/ the tooth fairy and Easter Bunny) when I was about 11. There was no harsh discovery, nor any talk w/ my parents. I just let it go. And as a teacher, I always tell my kids that they're welcome to believe anything they want to, but they are not allowed to go around spoiling anyone's Christmas, or there will be trouble. I believe in the magic of childhood, too. Thanks Mom and Dad.

I was about 5 or 6. I asked Santa for a Mego Batmobile and didn't get it and put 2 and 2 together.

Probably about 7 or 8. I held out a little, until one Christmas Eve I couldn't sleep and overheard my parents getting all the gifts out of their hiding spot. It didn't really upset me though.

I don't remember the exact moment, but it must have been pre-1978 (when I was 8) because I remember getting STAR WARS toys that year (the first year Kenner released them), and knowing that Mom got them for me; she was very matter-of-fact about it, as though it was well understood by that point that Santa was not a reality. But I also recall, a couple of years prior to that, looking out the window on Christmas Eve with my sister, as we searched the night sky for signs of Rudolph leading Santa's sleigh! We tried to distinguish between airplane lights and Rudolph's nose! So I would guess I was 6 or 7 when either my sister or I (she was one year older) figured out the secret and shared it with the other.

Addendum: I also remember getting Star Trek and WoZ Megos one year, and knowing then that Mom and Daddy had set them up during the night. I must have been 6 then, in 1976, so my Santa-belief days must have ended pretty early, say when I was 5!

I was in the 3rd grade and overheard some of the kids at school talking about it. I asked my mom point blank and she told me truth. It wasn't any kind of joy stealing experience.

My wife and I do the Santa thing but we have purposely not tried to make a big deal out of it. They have always received presents from us and a few from Santa. My 13 year old found out about the same age as I was and he wasn't bothered by it. My daughter knew at a very young age (around 3 or 4 years old) because she has friends who's parents did not want to expose their kids to Santa and they made sure they told my daughter without my permission.

The only one we have left now is our 7 year old and he's asking my wife questions. She hasn't said one way or the other and I guess wants to have one last Christmas. We still give our other two kids a few gifts from Santa with a wink and we probably always will.

I was about 9 or 10 when I figured it out.

Someone told me in 3rd grade, I think, and though I argued with him I somehow knew he was right.
