I am so sick and tired...

...of being sick and tired!

Ever since my son started Kindergarten in August, I've been sick. It seems like he brings home everything imaginable, and my wife and I get it all.

For the last week or so, I've had a sore throat, runny nose, congestion, low-grade fever, nasty cough, scratchy eyes, and generally felt like the walking dead. It's now four days until Christmas, and I'm not better yet!

Ugh.

I guess the point of this post is to ask if others were suddenly sick all the time the first year of their child's school career. I've heard that this is the case from others, just was wondering what your experience was.

Yeah, this has happened every Fall, even into college.

The university's policy on absences is so strict that it actually discourages people from staying home when they're sick, so every little illness becomes a campus-wide epidemic.

Seems like whenever I come down with a cold usually around the start of each year I keep it for months. I've tried a lot of different remedies including that Airborne stuff and nothing seems to work. Hang in there Joe.

Fletcher gets sick too, of course, but seems to get over it much quicker than I do. The little plague carrier that he is!

I had something that just wouldn't go away as well a couple weeks ago...in fact it lasted over two weeks, uncontrollable cough, congestion, headache, body aches. It just lasted forever...I finally started feeling better early last week. Get well soon Joe.

I forgot to mention the best part - I'm a glutton for punishment! I volunteer at the school 3-4 hours a week. Am I nuts? Apparently so.

I get it from people at work who have kids and get infected themselves. They bring it to work instead of staying home.

I can relate. Got very sick in September, had a foot of colon removed in November. It will be almost a year before things work right again.

I refer to my children's school and preschool as the "Disease Farm", if that answers your question.

Last Christmas we were quarantined thanks to the chicken pox. That was a blast, Swanson's makes a pretty lousy Turkey dinner.

When I started doing my student teaching I was sick all the way through. Now I've finally built up a pretty strong immunity. My kids and wife are another story entirely.

The flip side to perfect attendance awards keeping kids at school is that some parents send their kids when they're sick because they don't want to hire a babysitter. I also wash my hands quite a bit and try to make sure my kids do as well.

Also, you might want to check to see if the school's student bathrooms have soap and warm water in them. At my first school the janitors took the soap out of the student bathrooms because the kids were playing with it and wasting it! Gross!

Yeah we had the 1st year sickies...for all 3 kids. What was worse though was continually having to go through their hair for nits...ever since they got rid of the nit nurse and her magic disinfected metal comb in the UK there has been epidemics every year...

Hey Joe -

I have three boys - and we stayed sick most of the first year our first boy was in school. It does get better though. Seems to take a year to build up some immunities in your system towards most of that stuff.

My wife taught pre-school for 7 years. She was sick ALL of the first year, and then didn't seem to get sick after that.

Hang in there - the first year is the worst. It does get better.
