Good Stuff in Montreal?

My wife and I went to Montreal in the summer with a couple of friends of ours - they weren't into toys/comics/anything awesome - so we didn't hunt any of that stuff down.
To be honest, it was nice getting away for the weekend but Montreal itself was kind of a let down for us - possibly because my wife and I would have had more freedom to find cool stuff and explore more without the couple we were with.
Incredible smoked meat and deli food:
Schwartz's - Montreal Hebrew Delicatessen - A Montreal Tradition Since 1928
Great poutine:
La Banquise - Poutine
We didn't go, but EVERYONE (I'm literally serious - EVERYONE) we asked what to do to in Montreal said we should go to Super Sexe: http://supersexe.ca/ -

My lovely spouse was born in Montreal and has her familial roots there.
Make sure you get there early for Schwarz's... the lineup goes down the street on weekends. We do Dunn's in a pinch if we're in a hurry and can't wait around.
Also grab some Montreal Bagels just up the street.
Fairmount Bagel Bakery Inc.
The wife and I have been to Super Sexe on occassion, and it is couples friendly and very much geared for tourists, meaning you will find many women patrons there as well (unlike other establishments). When I've organized stags in Montreal, it's one of the early stops, but not anyplace we linger for too long.
For night-life I recommend Crescent street... generally better if you only speak english, although St Laurent and St Denis have places which I think are much more fun.
Old Montreal of course. The old expo site on the island if you are feeling outdoorsy... you can rent a bicycle and ride it around the racetrack.
If you are a Jazz fan, I like this place...

Montreal's chinatown is worth taking a stroll through, but the crap they tend to serve there is strictly for the tourists. It might seem like an odd suggestion, but here is my favourite chinese restaurant in montreal...
Montreal Mirror : Restaurants
It is also close to...
Comic shops...
Captain Quebec, Astro Libre and 1,000,000 comix are all a stone's throw from each other and close enough to the old Montreal Forum (which is now a Future Shop amongst other things). They have seen better days, but are good in a pinch if you like to dig around dusty bins and such.
Anything else and you are generally driving out a ways to get to.Last edited by samurainoir; Oct 3, '11, 4:06 PM.Comment

I seem to recall the last time I was in town there was an action figure/toy store down town that catered to the vintage crowd.
Didn't go, as I upgraded my train ticket and left early after a long day of pitching.Places to find PlaidStallions online: https://linktr.ee/Plaidstallions

street from the downtown campus. One of my favourite spots in the city. I used to go
there often.
La Cabane is a great spot on St. Laurent Street. Lots of students and artists hang out there
and drink cheap pitchers of beer.
There are some excellent museums and art galleries as well.
Make sure you don't leave town without having a Montreal Smoked Meat Sandwich.
Old Montreal is a great place to check out too. Not too far from downtown.
The Notre Dame Cathedral is worth checking out in Old Montreal. It is a beautiful old church.
Also the Centaur Theatre in Old Montreal. I used to perform there often.
If you enjoy theatre they have some great shows there.
Lots of cool spots on Crescent Street as well.
Lots of old book stores around as well.
Montreal has great food and lots of great entertainment.
I lived there for twelve years and I still miss it when I think about it.
Have a great trip.Last edited by Johnny; Oct 4, '11, 5:49 AM.Comment
