Critical thinking - a MM trading card contest

I've got a small stash of cards to give away. The rules are simple. The first person to figure out the answer to the question gets them. The best part of this is you can't google the answer. It's a question that requires progressive thinking and analysis. And before you write it, there is a very logical and decisive answer.

the cards: Dr. McCoy, Ivanhoe, Green Arrow, AHI Monsters, Hugo, Lone Ranger, Speedy, Little John, Sitting Bull, Doctor Steel, Will Scarlet, Bulletman, Wyat earp

Now the question: In 1916, the United Kingdom began issuing steel helmets to it's troops on the frontlines of WWI. Within three months, the number of head injuries tripled from previous months. Why did the frequency of head injuries immediately skyrocket? The first correct answer wins. I'll check back in the morning to see if anyone played along.
I almost had a psychic girlfriend but she dumped me before we met.

If anyone here believes in psychokinesis, please raise my hand.

Head injuries increased because prior to the issue of the helmets the same injuries would have more than likely been actual casualties.

The force of a hit to the skull causes the steel of the helmet to go into the skull causing head trauma and instant death.......

I vaguely remember discussing this back in high school. If memory serves correctly, there was an issue with the weight of the helmet. Due to the new mass it made it more difficult for soldiers to maneuver.

I should have known Anthony would reason this out.

The number of reported head injuries tripled, but at the same time fatalities from head wounds were cut by two thirds. Injuries increased because deaths decreased.

I presented this conundrum to some of my peers in a manager meeting and nobody figured it out. We deal with numbers, sales figures, customer ratios and and endless amount of statistics. My point was numbers can be deceiving if presented certain ways.

            Well, that was over quickly.
