short attention span theatre? thats what cartoon network has turned into for the last decade or so. i cant sit and watch anything on there except Batman:BATB and clone wars

i think what really made filmation start looking dated was when shows like Thundercats started airing. that cartoon probably turned alot of folkes away from the old school studios to with its flashy animation.
One of my favorites bits about filmation was there backgrounds. Ive always loved the colors and designs they used on the heman and shera cartoons.

I also felt that the New Mighty Mouse and Ren & Stimpy were too "short attention span theatre" for me. I'm sure there was lots of gray area in that working environment, but to me it translated onto screen OK. Would love to have seen an official Tarzan DVD.

Yeah, I think it works for certain shows like Tarzan, Batman, Star Trek and the rotoscoping of the spaceships on Flash Gordon. The space ship scenes in FG were phenomenal! They really command your attention they way they were animated.

I think the use of stock animation and stiff poses defeated Filmation when they wanted to make more comedic shows or a cute animal show. The Groovie Ghoulies was pretty good but by the time you get to the 1980's with Superhero High it just doesn't help the humor get across.

Are there good quality sources of Tarzan out there? There's no legit release yet is there?

Best Filmation for me is Star Trek but I love most of their 60's/ 70's stuff.

Bought from this guy and I think their very good. I can watch them on my 46" HDTV so that says something right there. Now, of course, their not high def. But there are no resolution blotches or bad images. Everything is clean and mostly crisp.

You may not have heard of John Kricfalusi or John K as he liked to be called, but you've probably seen his work. Besides working for Filmation he worked for Ralph Bashki on The New Adventures of Mighty Mouse. Then he rose to fame with Ren & Stimpy. He did animation for a Bjork music video and created The Ripping Friends and Jimmy The Idiot Boy. He is very talented. I would say his criticisms are on target for the animation industry but even Lou Scheimer has joked about how Filmation's animation was stiff.

LOL! Nah, I don't know Kricfalusi personally I read interviews he did when he first gained fame with Ren & Stimpy. He used to blast Filmation because he said the Writers had real control at that studio and he felt that was wrong. He said the writers who worked there were failed live action scriptwriters for the most part. These guys couldn't get a job writing regular scripts so they went into animation and he felt they mucked the industry up. Kricfalusi had rule at his own studio: if you couldn't draw it you couldn't tell a story-you're not allowed to make a cartoon. All of this was a reaction to his days at Filmation. Look up his blog online. He still says it. He has no fear of reprisals.

filmation is one of my favorites as well. they do get alot of flack for the animation but the truth is during their time they were the place to go for adventure cartoons (sorry hanna-barbara) i know theres quite a few that dont like it here but Heman is just so much a part of my childhood i can only have good memories of it.
my other favs are:zorro, long ranger, blackstar(should have had more episodes), adventures of batman, and bravestar
still havent seen the webwoman and super 7 stuff. also want the flash gordan cartoon

I picked up the Blackstar set when it came out because I remembered it being cool as a kid....I got through maybe half the set before I stopped watching....stuff is just way to juvenile and the animation turned off my kids frmo having any interest in it

I love Blackstar more now then in 1981
